The precious dragon chair

In the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City (now the Palace Museum) in Beijing, China, there is a chair that is famous for its rumors. It is the dragon chair placed in the center of the hall. From the outside, this chair looks completely normal, it is also painted red and gilded like other dragon chairs, and has a beautiful dragon carving on top.

In fact, this dragon chair was originally thrown away in a warehouse at the end of the Qing Dynasty. It was not until after the founding of the People's Republic of China that historians discovered it and restored it. It is known that this dragon chair was made during the Ming Dynasty and continued to be used until the Qing Dynasty.

Many people thought that this dragon chair was made of dragon gold, but after the eight-nation coalition entered the Forbidden City, they scraped off the gold plating on the dragon chair. Only then did people realize that this chair was actually made of gilded wood.

However, the wood used to make this dragon chair is extremely valuable.

According to scientists, only 3 types of wood are used to make dragon chairs, and their price is much more expensive than gold.

First, it is birch wood. Since ancient times, birch has been considered a low-yield, high-priced tree. The birch trees chosen to make dragon chairs are often very old and rare.

The second is rosewood. This type of wood was only used by the royal family in feudal times. Rosewood has a faint fragrance and is very hard, so it was very popular at that time.

Third is nam moc wood. This type of wood is even more expensive than gold. In the royal family, only precious items are made from this type of wood.

The Scary Rumor of the Dragon Chair

Although this dragon chair is so precious, many strange things have happened around it. Even the Empress Dowager Cixi, a famous and powerful woman, did not dare to sit on this dragon chair. According to historical records, there were 3 characters who died strangely after sitting on this dragon chair.

The first person was Li Zicheng. He was the one who overthrew the Ming Dynasty and took the throne. However, he had only been on the throne for less than 40 days when Wu Sangui usurped the throne and hunted him down. Li Zicheng then died mysteriously.

The second person was Yuan Shikai. Although he was not the emperor, he was the one who threatened and chased the Qing emperor out of the palace. Later, Yuan Shikai restored the Forbidden City. The strange thing is, Yuan Shikai kept the dragon chair but put it in storage and requested that another chair be made in the Western style.

He did not want to be seen as the emperor of the old regime, so he did so. However, it is rumored that Yuan Shikai once sat on this dragon chair and died mysteriously 83 days later.

The third person was the leader of the eight-nation coalition - Waldersee. Not long after he tried to sit on the throne, Waldersee also died strangely.

However, scientists believe that this is just a rumor surrounding this dragon chair. Moreover, when the eight-nation coalition invaded the Forbidden City, many people took turns sitting on this dragon chair to take pictures. Therefore, it is not true to say that this dragon chair has the ability to curse those who sit on it.
