Ho Chi Minh City , an 18-year-old male student with severe dengue fever had to be hospitalized for 7 days, missed the high school graduation exam, and was treated free of charge by doctors at Cho Ray Hospital.
The male student started having symptoms of a fever of over 39 degrees Celsius, and taking fever-reducing medicine did not reduce it. The next day, the family called the exam health hotline to support candidates at Cho Ray Hospital, the doctor advised drinking plenty of water, taking fever-reducing medicine, and self-monitoring for a day. After that, the patient still had a high fever and muscle aches all over his body, the doctor requested emergency hospitalization on June 24.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Deputy Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, said that the treatment team is trying their best to save the patient, hoping that the young man will recover well so that he can take the high school graduation exam (taking place on June 28-29). Unfortunately, the patient's platelets are decreasing rapidly, and he cannot be discharged from the hospital to take the exam because he could bleed at any time, and if not treated promptly, it could be dangerous.

Having to miss the high school graduation exam, the patient overcame the dangerous stage of the disease and recovered and was discharged from the hospital on June 30. "After three years of studying hard and not being able to take the exam, I was very sad, but for the sake of my health, I had to accept it. Luckily, my son is progressing well," said the patient's father.
All examination and treatment costs, other than those covered by health insurance, are completely free of charge by the hospital, according to the health support program before, during and after the exam season that Cho Ray has implemented since June 17. The program also has a remote consultation hotline, in addition to 10 emergency teams to support candidates when they have health problems that need to be treated at home or hospitalized.
Doctors recommend that people with fever for 2-3 days or more may have dengue fever and should go to the hospital for examination and treatment. Note that one of the signs of worsening is more discomfort even though the fever has decreased or gone, not being able to eat or drink, and vomiting a lot. In addition, other signs that require immediate hospitalization are more abdominal pain; cold, clammy hands and feet; fatigue, restlessness; nosebleeds, mouth bleeding, abnormal vaginal bleeding, vomiting blood, black or red stools; behavioral changes such as confusion, agitation, restlessness, or lethargy; not urinating for more than 6 hours.
Ho Chi Minh City recorded nearly 8,300 cases of dengue fever in the first 6 months of the year, 53% lower than the same period last year, but the number of cases has increased rapidly recently. People should pay attention to killing mosquitoes and larvae, and sleeping under mosquito nets even during the day to prevent the disease.
