Fishing villages on the lake
After nearly 2 hours by motorboat, we arrived at the fishing village in Phuc Yen commune, Lam Binh district. The conversation with Mr. Ma Van Chung surprised us because he had not visited his family for more than 3 months. Mr. Chung said that his family used to live in Thuy Loa commune, now they have moved to the resettlement area in Lang Quan (Yen Son district). Life in the remote mountains is quite boring, but in return, the abundant aquatic resources make up for it, earning a lot of money. Mr. Chung invested in raising fish fry, earning more than 100 million VND each year, the family has money to raise children, and pay for daily expenses.
In 2006, Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir was completed and put into use. The reservoir is more than 8,000 hectares wide, with silver carp, catfish, green dam fish, and anh vu fish competing to breed. This aquatic resource has attracted many people to stay and earn a living, developing the economy from fishing. Many fishing villages have been formed here, such as Ben Thuy fishing village, Phuc Yen fishing village...
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Na Hang district, on average each year, the aquaculture output on the lake reaches more than 800 tons with many types of specialty fish such as bream, catfish, and spotted bream; the exploited output is more than 300 tons...
Ben Thuy fishing village has 10 households fishing and raising fish in cages. Small households have about 10 cages, large households have up to 60 cages. Mr. Trinh Van Ha (born in 1989) has become the young owner of the most fish cages in Ben Thuy fishing village. Mr. Ha shared that the water source here is very clean, helping the fish to be less susceptible to disease, and the meat is firm and delicious. To have fish to sell regularly, he raises fish in groups. Each year, he earns nearly 200 million VND.
Attractive “tourist menu”
Currently, in the Na Hang ecological lake area, there are more than 1,300 fish cages with more than 100 households, including 2 enterprises and 2 cooperatives participating in large-scale specialty fish farming, with a total output of over 900 tons/year. The development of raising specialty fish species such as: catfish, lang, bong, red tilapia, coi... has helped many households have a good income.
In addition to economic development, fishing villages have also become a tourism product in the "tourism menu" of attractive experiences on the ecological lake. The People's Committees of Na Hang and Lam Binh districts have developed a plan to develop typical agricultural farms associated with new rural construction to serve tourism development. According to Mr. Cao Van Minh, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Lam Binh district, with the motto "Aquaculture development must be associated with tourism", taking advantage of the water surface area to improve people's lives, in the coming time, the district will promote many tours and lake tourism routes, guiding tourists to experience fishing villages.
Ms. Vo Nhu Ngoc is a tour guide for a travel company in Hanoi who often leads tourists to the Na Hang - Lam Binh ecological lake area. She shared that the people living in the fishing village are emotional, sincere, and hospitable, so everyone loves them. Fish and shrimp in the lake are delicious and cheap. She also helps many tourists buy shrimp as gifts, priced at about 50 - 70 thousand VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Sieu, a photographer in Hanoi, also commented that the fishing village scene here is most beautiful at sunset and sunrise. Floating houses anchored around the lake are often roofed with palm leaves, which are light and cool. In the afternoon, fishermen go out to cast their nets, then return to prepare dinner. Vegetables are always available here, all wild; there are all kinds of fish. Life here is so peaceful, it is truly a place for urban people to relax.
