That is the opinion of MSc. Dinh Van Mai, Soft Skills Lecturer, Student Capacity Development Center, Van Lang University in an interview with The Gioi and Viet Nam Newspaper on the occasion of Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20) this year.

Teachers in the era of growth

In the context of an increasingly developed and deeply integrated society, how has the role of teachers changed compared to before? Why has that role become more important in the era of national development?

Towards the new era - the era of national development, building a rich and prosperous country, education is the "golden key" to open the door to development and global integration. The role of teachers is not only limited to imparting knowledge but also adapting to the development of society and modern education to create decent and quality products.

Teachers are the ones who guide students to choose the right information on the internet, develop critical and creative thinking; accompany and advise students to discover their own abilities, practice appropriate life values in a changing world.

Furthermore, teachers are also moral models in the digital age through polite behavior online, actively applying technology to innovate teaching, helping students become global citizens. In particular, teachers are examples of lifelong self-study to keep up with the times and inspire students to make efforts.

With an important and responsible role, teachers are the core factor helping the country build high-quality human resources, training a generation of Vietnamese people who are brave, dare to face challenges and are creative, leading in the field they are pursuing.

On the other hand, in the face of rapid social change, negative trends can affect the values of the younger generation. Therefore, teachers need to help students maintain the core values of the nation, promote a positive lifestyle, be responsible to the community, and contribute to building and protecting the good traditional values of the nation.

To meet the demands of the times, from your own experience, what skills do you think a modern teacher needs to be equipped with? And how can we improve the quality of the teaching staff to meet those demands?

Modern teachers need to master professional knowledge and regularly practice soft skills as well as apply technology in teaching. Teachers need to develop active teaching methods, focus on learners, and use a variety of different assessment forms to help learners develop their thinking, increase their experience and product creativity.

"Towards a new era - an era of national development, building a rich and prosperous country, education is the 'golden key' that opens the door to development and global integration. The role of teachers is not only limited to imparting knowledge but also opens up many different aspects to adapt to the development of society and modern education".

A teacher who knows how to communicate, listen, and share with students is someone who inspires students to be proactive and confident. At the same time, it is necessary to regularly improve management skills, organize classes, handle pedagogical situations that arise when teaching, build a positive learning environment, and cooperate and support each other.

They are also pioneers in strong digital transformation in teaching, mastering tools such as Google Classroom, Zoom, Canva, or other teaching support software, knowing how to make online lectures, videos, and interactive exercises more accessible and interesting for learners. Each teacher needs to actively learn how to secure information and prevent fraud to guide learners to use the internet safely and intelligently.

To improve the quality of the teaching staff, it is necessary to innovate the training program to suit the digital age. Develop short-term training programs on digital skills in teaching and applying technology in teaching. Provide online learning resources for teachers to refer to. At the same time, build a team of teachers in new fields such as STEAM, career guidance, and comprehensive education. Regularly organize academic activities and professional exchanges at home and abroad to update new knowledge, propose forms of student assessment appropriate to their abilities.

In particular, improving working conditions, facilities and benefits to make teachers feel secure in their work. Proper investment in teachers will ensure a solid foundation for building future generations, making an important contribution to the country's development in the new era.

Be a shining example of morality and lifestyle

With the strong development of information technology, can you share innovative and effective teaching methods to stimulate students' creativity and thinking?

Yes, traditional teaching methods need to change to suit the development of information technology and the learning needs of young generations in the digital age. Modern society requires learners not only to have knowledge but also to practice developing skills and gain practical experience. Traditional teaching methods are difficult to meet the requirements, often creating boredom in the way learners approach knowledge.

With a learner-centered orientation and digital transformation in education, teachers encourage students to explore knowledge through a variety of methods such as group discussions, presentations, and project-based learning. At the same time, technology is integrated into teaching with popular applications such as quizizz, kahoot, padlet, and mentimeter to enhance learning effectiveness.

In addition, teachers take advantage of videos, images, online documents, and simulation applications to illustrate lectures more vividly.

Besides imparting knowledge, teachers also play an important role in shaping students’ personalities. In your opinion, how can we effectively educate students about ethics and lifestyle in today’s changing society?

Effective moral and lifestyle education for students in a changing society like today is very necessary and should be carried out regularly with a variety of methods. First of all, teachers must be good examples of morality and lifestyle for students to follow.

Firstly, through daily behavior, teachers promote honesty, practice what they preach, fairness and responsibility for work, and build friendly relationships with students.

Second, integrate ethical lessons into each subject such as honesty in Mathematics, evoking patriotism in History, and developing environmental protection awareness through science subjects.

Third, promptly commend exemplary students and student groups who perform good and meaningful actions towards the community. Develop volunteer activities, community clubs or green living to create a favorable environment for students to participate in sharing and living responsibly.

Fourth , build a core group of students to develop forums for academic exchange, build a healthy culture in schools, and say no to violence. Launch speaking contests, storytelling contests, art performances, painting contests, or poetry, short stories, and comics on the topics of ethics and lifestyle for students to participate in.

Finally, develop a clear code of conduct on ethical behavior and lifestyle for students to implement and self-monitor, remind each other to act together; coordinate with families to unify ethical education methods to create synchronization between family and school.

To improve the quality of education, cooperation between schools, families and society is extremely important. What suggestions do you have to enhance this coordination?

Cooperation between school, family and society is a key factor to improve the quality of education. This cooperation not only helps students develop comprehensively but also creates a sustainable educational environment.

To do that, it is necessary to have understanding and willingness to share responsibility among the parties involved. In particular, schools need to develop formal communication channels to exchange information with parents on a regular basis through electronic contact books, educational applications, regular parent meetings, chat applications, and social networks.

The school has a policy of encouraging parents to participate in school activities with students such as seminars, book festivals, sports events, and traditional festivals to increase cohesion.

At the same time, conduct regular surveys with parents and students to improve the quality of coordination. Parents should proactively update students' learning and behavior so that teachers can grasp information promptly; actively participate in school activities, contribute initiatives to enhance cooperation...

Open up many opportunities for teachers

In the process of carrying out his mission, what challenges are teachers facing and what opportunities are opening up?

In the 4.0 era, teachers have to face many difficulties and challenges, but that is also the motivation for each teacher to consciously strive to study, practice and develop themselves every day for the cause of "growing people".

The challenges that teachers face come not only from the nature of their profession but also from the constant changes in society. Difficulties include a workload that often includes not only teaching but also many administrative procedures. High expectations from parents create additional pressure for teachers.

In addition, the uneven development of students' cognition and behavior makes classroom management more difficult, and teaching methods require innovation and flexibility. These pressures make teachers susceptible to stress, burnout, and difficulty in creating a balance between work and daily life.

On the other hand, the welfare and income regimes are not commensurate with the tireless efforts of teachers. The facilities are not yet uniform, there is still a shortage in some places, or there is a lack of human resources in education and a part of society does not properly recognize the value of the teaching profession... But it is truly precious and very respectful that despite all these difficulties, many teachers have devoted their youth to the teaching profession.

Facing the digital age, teachers have more opportunities to exchange and learn teaching experiences and improve their qualifications. Academic forums and scientific research are organized in a variety of forms for teachers to approach modern teaching trends and contribute their voices to the development of education.

Facilities are being invested in more to suit the conditions of innovative education. Many schools are actively applying technology to teaching, organizing training courses to improve teachers' digital capacity. Many teachers are bold in applying technology to teaching and sharing experiences with each other, creating a valuable online learning resource.

Models and experience initiatives are applied in practice to create practical value; or funding activities for scientific research. Teachers also participate in many training activities to improve their understanding and access to technology.

In particular, the support policies for teachers in recent times have received attention and direction for improvement from the Government and sectors. Awards and honors for outstanding teachers in teaching, scientific research, and community service are regularly organized by the State to promptly encourage the silent sacrifices of teachers.

The education sector and teachers are facing many great opportunities for innovation and development. With the spirit of learning, creativity and responsibility, teachers not only adapt to the times but also need to become pioneers, leading the development of students.

Thank you!
