On the evening of December 7, after about 4 hours of voting in the hall, the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol was canceled. For this motion to pass, the support of at least 2/3 of the members of the National Assembly, equivalent to 200 out of 300 seats, is needed. According to Yonhap , the impeachment motion against President Yoon was canceled due to the lack of the minimum number of delegates participating.
"After checking, the total number of valid votes was 195, which is not enough for the minimum number of votes. Therefore, I declare that this motion is not passed," CNA quoted South Korean National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik as saying.

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung said he would not give up on punishing President Yoon for his brief martial law declaration. He apologized to the South Korean public for not delivering "the results you wanted."
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the People's Power Party stressed that they "cannot allow a tragedy that paralyzed the government to happen again".
People Power Party lawmaker Kim Sang-wook, who was greeted with a standing ovation when he returned to the chamber to vote, told reporters that he voted against the impeachment motion. He said that while he disagreed with the bill, he still believed President Yoon was unfit to serve in his current role.
Kim revealed that he had supported the impeachment bill until December 6, but changed his position after President Yoon's statement on the morning of December 7. Earlier in the day, President Yoon apologized to the nation and said that the declaration of martial law stemmed from "his despair as President."
As the majority of the ruling party's lawmakers left the hall and boycotted the vote, the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea criticized: " This is an act of ignoring the will of the people. This is contempt for the people, contempt for the National Assembly. As lawmakers, you cannot do this ." At the time the PPP lawmakers left, many opposition lawmakers also expressed strong opposition: " Traitors, come back now! "
The opposition leader previously said that if the impeachment motion fails, they will bring the matter back next Wednesday, December 11.
