Yet Kieu was a talented general during the reign of King Tran Nhan Tong, who together with General Tran Hung Dao bravely fought against the Yuan army. He was good at swimming and diving, so he was assigned the task of piercing enemy ships and destroying their navy.
Yet Kieu (left) approached and destroyed the enemy ship.
The play recreates the peaceful Vietnamese countryside with gong and drum festivals, boat racing, singing, fishing competitions... which is also the land where Yet Kieu was born and raised. Then the legend of the white buffalo mysteriously emerged, the king recruited talented people to fight the enemy. After that, there were heroic battles between the Tran army, Yet Kieu and the Yuan army, the enemy was scattered and fled, the country was peaceful and joyful again.
All those details are shown on a few square meters of shimmering, attractive water surface. The puppets move gracefully, including people, fish, buffalo, dragons, boats, swords, bows, gongs, drums, etc. The most interesting thing is the music and dialogue inserted in a way that is no less attractive than a play on stage. The puppeteers with those wonderful hands when lifting the bamboo curtain to greet, made the audience exclaim in surprise, because most of them are young and "beautiful men and women". Phuong Nam Theater is possessing a very strong force. The play will be performed from now until Tet, 2-3 shows per day.
