Recently, a new feature in ChatGPT that allows users to create photos in the style of the animation studio Studio Ghibli is causing a stir on social networks.

Reminiscent of the works of animation master Miyazaki Hayao, the trend has seen OpenAI's chatbot's usage hit a record high in the past week, straining its servers and forcing it to temporarily limit usage.

The new feature also opens up a robust debate about copyright, data training, and the future of creativity in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). While AI is becoming a powerful tool for animators, the legal and ethical challenges remain unresolved.

According to Professor Kim Min-ji from the Department of Media and Contents at Kyonggi University (South Korea), Copyright Law mainly protects the “expression” of creative ideas in works. The distinctive artistic style of an artist, such as Ghibli, is not explicitly protected by copyright. Merely imitating Ghibli’s style may not automatically be considered an infringement under current law. However, this expert also warned of the possibility of legal issues arising if OpenAI used Studio Ghibli’s copyrighted works to train AI without the permission of the copyright owner.

Besides, this new feature also causes a lot of controversy when it is unclear how the rapid advancement of technology will affect the creative industries and content production.

Ms. Kim (35 years old), an art teacher, said that many parents are quite hesitant to let their children pursue graphic design and animation. “Technological advances have caused a crisis for creators when they see that AI can create products that previously required a lot of time and effort,” she said.

On the contrary, according to Ms. Kim, the impact may not be as bad as many people worry. Technology is becoming a “powerful assistant”, helping people increase their creativity instead of completely replacing it.

The head of a South Korean AI startup said the new feature will definitely lead to a major change in the creative industry, but the formation of a market will take time until issues such as copyright and ethical use of data are resolved.

In the wake of the controversy, OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the data used to train their AI models or the legality surrounding this latest feature.
