On June 19, specialist doctor Truong Minh Hieu, Head of the Endoscopy Department, Xuyen A Long An General Hospital, said that after receiving and performing an endoscopy, he discovered a round, black foreign object in patient T's esophagus, about 20 mm in diameter, not sharp. The medical team removed the foreign object with a specialized tool, examined the esophagus, and found no scratches on the cardia, no bleeding.
After successfully removing the foreign object, the patient felt less uncomfortable and was discharged the same day.
Doctor Minh Hieu said that recently the hospital has continuously received many cases of foreign objects in the esophagus including dentures, medicine containers, toothpicks, bottle corks, etc.
Foreign body in patient's esophagus
Typically, a female patient (33 years old, residing in Vinh Long province) after dinner discovered that a bone was stuck in her throat, causing difficulty swallowing and pain. She underwent an endoscopy at the clinic but no foreign object was found. The next day, her condition worsened so the patient quickly went to Vinh Long General Hospital for examination.
At the hospital, after conducting an examination, the doctors quickly performed an esophagogastroduodenoscopy and discovered a foreign object in the mouth of the esophagus, a 25x30 mm piece of chicken meat with bones lying across the esophagus.
Doctor Hieu said that to prevent the possibility of foreign objects, the most important thing is to be careful when eating, chew thoroughly, do not eat in a hurry, give up the habit of holding toothpicks in your mouth... Develop scientific eating habits, avoid giving foreign objects the chance to enter the esophagus.
In case of large, sharp, angular foreign objects such as bones, zinc wire, medicine shells, etc., the patient should not use their hands to remove them or swallow rice because it can easily cause the foreign object to go deeper inside and be difficult to remove. As soon as there are symptoms of suspected foreign object, the patient should immediately go to a medical facility for examination.
