This is the third autologous stem cell transplant performed at Da Nang Hospital.

Previously, patient Ho Thi N. (born in 1973, residing in Quang Ngai city, Quang Ngai province) had severe bone pain and could not walk, so she went to Da Nang Hospital for examination.

Through testing and evaluation, the patient is in the high-risk group, stage 3 multiple myeloma, so a bone marrow transplant using autologous stem cell transplantation is indicated.

The patient underwent bone fusion surgery and medical treatment at Da Nang Hospital for 4 sessions, each session lasting 3 weeks.

After treatment, tests showed that the patient had achieved complete remission. The patient was transferred to the transplant area - Organ Transplant and Stem Cell Transplant Center (absolutely sterile isolation area).

Doctors from the Department of Neurology-Musculoskeletal-Clinical Hematology performed autologous stem cell transplantation for the patient.

Doctors separated the stem cells using a separator, then infused them back into the patient's body through an intravenous line. After nearly 20 days of stem cell infusion, the patient was stable and walking normally.

Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong, Neurology-Musculoskeletal-Clinical Hematology, Da Nang Hospital, who directly performed the autologous stem cell transplant for patient N., shared: The difficulty of the transplant is calculating how to extract enough stem cells to successfully perform the transplant.

The most important thing is to ensure an absolutely sterile environment for patients. Departments work closely together to ensure clean air, RO water, strictly controlled food, and to ensure that all patient supplies are sterilized...

Autologous stem cell transplantation is a new advanced treatment method applied in Da Nang, taking the patient's own stem cells and transplanting them back into the patient, helping to quickly restore the patient's hematopoietic system after high-dose chemotherapy, to prevent life-threatening complications.

"This technique offers a chance of survival and significantly improves the quality of life for patients with malignant hematological diseases such as lymphoma, myeloproliferative syndrome, multiple myeloma, leukemia, and Hodgkin's disease," Dr. Huong added.

It is known that since 2023, Da Nang Hospital has successfully performed the first autologous stem cell transplant with the support of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. Up to now, the Hospital has routinely performed this technique.
