Save a boy who swallowed a large piece of metal

After swallowing a piece of metal, the child was quickly taken to Xuyen A General Hospital in Vinh Long by his family for emergency treatment in a state of continuous vomiting and a very uncomfortable throat.

Upon admission, the child was ordered to have an X-ray to determine the location of the foreign object. The X-ray image showed a round, radiopaque foreign object in the patient's lower pharynx - esophagus, with an estimated size of about 17 mm, larger than the diameter of the upper digestive tract of a 30-month-old child.

The patient was quickly transferred to the Endoscopy Department. Here, doctors urgently performed an emergency endoscopy to remove the foreign object. After successfully removing the foreign object, the doctor checked again at the site of the foreign object and found a slight scratch, fortunately not causing serious complications.

Foreign object removed from boy's esophagus

On September 23, specialist doctor Nguyen Trong Tuong, Deputy Head of the Endoscopy Department, Xuyen A General Hospital, Vinh Long, said that if the foreign object is not removed promptly, it can become stuck in the esophagus, causing dangerous complications.

"Foreign objects falling into the airway or esophagus cause unpredictable consequences, even life-threatening if not treated promptly. There have been many heartbreaking cases of children choking on foreign objects," the doctor emphasized.

Because young children are active and curious, parents need to pay special attention not to let them play with small, sharp toys, or easily swallowed objects such as batteries, coins, marbles, objects containing toxic chemicals, etc. Always supervise and do not let children play alone.
