On September 15th, Dr. Nguyen Thi Quynh Nga, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Xuyen A General Hospital in Tay Ninh , stated that examination revealed a tear in Ms. K.'s right eye of the cornea and sclera, with intraocular tissue trapped in the tear.
"The patient needed emergency suturing of the tear in the eyeball to preserve the trapped intraocular tissue, minimize the risk of eye infection, and most importantly, preserve vision. In particular, the patient also had a history of diabetes. Therefore, the doctors focused intensely on developing a suitable treatment plan for the patient," Dr. Nga said.
After 5 days of combined treatment by ophthalmologists and endocrinologists, Ms. K.'s eyesight stabilized and she was discharged from the hospital. Her vision was preserved at 70% compared to normal vision.
Eye injury while riding an electric bicycle.
According to Doctor Nga, the hospital has recently received numerous cases of dangerous eye injuries from daily activities and work, affecting vision. For example, V. (12 years old, residing in Tay Ninh) lost balance while riding an electric bicycle and suffered a severe impact to her eye, causing pain and reduced vision.
V. had her eyesight checked again after the accident.
Examination revealed that V. had anterior chamber hemorrhage (intraocular bleeding) - a dangerous injury commonly seen after eye trauma. V. needed to be hospitalized to control the bleeding, inflammation, and intraocular pressure.
After 3 days of treatment, V.'s condition improved significantly. The pain subsided, her right eye gradually regained vision, her health stabilized, and she was discharged from the hospital. Her vision at the time of the injury was 3/10, and at the follow-up examination it had recovered to 10/10.
Eye injuries during work
Unlike the two cases above, who were fortunate enough to recover their vision, Mr. H. (30 years old, residing in Tay Ninh) suffered a very serious eye injury while working. Doctors provided first aid, stopped the bleeding, and examined his eye, determining that it was severely injured due to a strong impact. After the injury, his left eye lost its ability to perceive light, and there was a long tear in the sclera and cornea. He needed emergency suturing of the eyeball to minimize the risk of infection. However, only the eyeball could be preserved aesthetically; his near vision function was almost completely lost.
According to Russian doctors, eye injuries, whether mild or severe, can cause serious damage to vision if not properly treated and managed promptly. After an injury, one should not attempt self-treatment such as removing foreign objects, rubbing the eye to dislodge them, or buying eye drops without consulting an ophthalmologist.
"Eye injuries, especially those involving the eyeball, can lead to late post-traumatic complications such as increased pressure, cataracts, uveitis, etc. Signs such as redness, pain, and blurred vision after an impact are considered warning signs. Therefore, when an eye injury occurs, quickly go to the nearest medical facility for examination to avoid dangerous complications later," Dr. Nga advised.
