The road to Hon Chuoi Island is still a series of bumpy stairs, or clinging to jagged rocks. There are no motorbikes or bicycles here.
Hon Chuoi is located in Song Doc town, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, about 32 km west of the mainland. The island has an area of about 7 km2, the highest point above sea level is nearly 170m. |
Hon Chuoi Island is one of the important outpost islands in the Southwest of the Fatherland, and is also one of the five islands in the Thanh Nien Island Construction Project (2013-2020 period) approved by the Prime Minister, along with Tran Island (Co To Island District, Quang Ninh), Tho Chu Island (Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang), Bach Long Vi Island (Hai Phong City) and Con Co Island (Quang Tri). |
Although not far from the mainland, the living and traveling conditions of the army and people on the island are still difficult. Along with that, Hon Chuoi Island has a very complex terrain, high slopes, harsh climate conditions, little rain, much sunshine with two distinct windy seasons. |
Currently, the island has a self-governing residential group with nearly 70 households and more than 200 people. People live mainly by cage fish farming and fishing. |
Other forces stationed on the island include Radar Station 615 of Regiment 551, Naval Region 5; Border Guard Station 704/Ca Mau Provincial Border Guard; Company 1, Battalion 885, Engineer Brigade 81 and Hon Chuoi Lighthouse Station. In the photo, soldiers increase production at the unit. |

Hon Chuoi Island does not have a medical station or a national school system for children on the island to study. Therefore, the self-governing people's group has coordinated with Border Guard Station 704 and Radar Station 615 to open a charity class taught by Major Tran Binh Phuc - Deputy Head of the Mass Mobilization Team of Hon Chuoi Border Guard Station. Currently, the class has students from grades 1 to 7 and is recognized as a leader in the education system of Song Doc Town. |
Compared to other islands in the Southwest sea, getting to Hon Chuoi island is quite difficult because Hon Chuoi is still quite wild and mysterious, with cliffs tens of meters high and dense primeval forest. |
The road to Hon Chuoi Island is still a series of bumpy stairs, or clinging to jagged rocks. There are no motorbikes or bicycles here yet, perhaps that is why Hon Chuoi does not have a tourist route. To get to the island, you have to take a boat of the border guards or a fishing boat of the seafarers. |
However, with clear blue sea water, strangely shaped cliffs and rugged terrain, Hon Chuoi is definitely a destination that every backpacker wants to visit once. And when coming to Hon Chuoi, don't forget to visit Hon Chuoi Lighthouse located on the highest mountain top built by the French and admire the panoramic view from above. Surely you will have an interesting experience to reach the lighthouse after crossing the primeval forest about 3.5km, 43 spiral stairs. |
