Scientific workshop 'Prospects of major power competition in the Indo-Pacific region to 2030, impact on ASEAN and Vietnam'

The results obtained at the Workshop will be practical contributions to the research, planning of foreign policies and development strategies of ASEAN and Vietnam.

Overview of the Workshop.

On the afternoon of April 1, the Diplomatic Academy successfully organized the scientific workshop “Prospects of major power competition in the Indo-Pacific region to 2030, impact on ASEAN and Vietnam” with the participation of many experts, scientists of different generations and researchers from units inside and outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The workshop is within the framework of the Ministry-level Independent Project “Impact of major power competition in the Indo-Pacific region on ASEAN and Vietnam by 2030” chaired by Dr. Le Viet Duyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Science, Information and International Research Journal, Diplomatic Academy.

The workshop focused on clarifying the following contents: Prospects for competition between major power pairs (such as the US - China, China - Japan and China - India) in the Indo-Pacific region until 2030; prospects for participation of middle powers such as South Korea, Australia and multilateral and sub-multilateral cooperation mechanisms in the region in the context of increasing major power competition; impacts on ASEAN and ASEAN's response to major power competition in the Indo-Pacific region in the coming time; impacts on Vietnam and policy recommendations.

Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Acting Director of the Diplomatic Academy, delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Acting Director of the Diplomatic Academy, assessed that the research topic in general and the workshop in particular are of great significance, directly contributing to the country's foreign policy planning. The Indo-Pacific region is home to many major countries, is developing rapidly and is witnessing important strategic adjustments by major countries, pivoting to this region.

Dr. Nguyen Hung Son also emphasized the objective and subjective factors affecting the competition (and cooperation) process between major countries in the region.

The workshop was chaired by Dr. Le Viet Duyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Science, Information and International Research Journal. In his introductory speech, Dr. Le Viet Duyen gave an overview of the trend of major power competition in the Indo-Pacific region, its positive and negative impacts on ASEAN and Vietnam. Analyzing the opportunities and challenges for ASEAN, the speech also proposed policy recommendations for ASEAN and Vietnam in the context of the rapidly changing and unpredictable geostrategic environment in the region.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Phuong Binh spoke at the Workshop.

The presentations by Dr. Nguyen Hong Quang, Deputy Director of the Department of Americas, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Xuan Vinh, Director of the Institute of History, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and Dr. Ha Viet Anh, Department of Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, deepened the relevant aspects of the great power competition in the region, such as the core elements of strategic competition, the characteristics of over 20 initiatives of countries related to the Indo-Pacific region, the role of sub-multilateral organizations and middle powers in the strategic competition between the two superpowers, the US and China; the impact on ASEAN in general and Vietnam in particular as a member of ASEAN and a country with an important geostrategic position and an increasingly important role in the strategies of major countries in the region.

The workshop is an opportunity for experts, scientists, and policy makers to exchange information, enhance understanding and cooperation among scientists, experts, and agencies participating in scientific research nationwide.
