Accidentally discovered cancer
On December 27, information from Can Tho Central General Hospital said that it had just successfully performed laparoscopic partial nephrectomy on a patient.
Patient TTH, 44 years old, residing in Cai Rang District, Can Tho City, said that before that, his health had no strange symptoms, no back pain, no blood in the urine. However, through a routine medical examination and ultrasound, he unexpectedly discovered a tumor in his kidney.
TTH patient's health has gradually recovered after endoscopic surgery to remove the tumor.
Hospitalized, CT scan, patient was determined to have a tumor in the lower pole of the left kidney about 2 cm, suspected of cancer.
Two days after admission, the doctors of the Department of Nephrology and Urology held a consultation and decided to perform laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for the patient. After discovering the tumor was located in the lower pole of the left kidney, the team temporarily clamped the renal artery to limit bleeding during tumor removal, then removed the entire tumor and part of the kidney tissue around the tumor to preserve maximum kidney tissue and took a cold biopsy of the renal hilum lymph nodes. The biopsy results later confirmed that the patient had renal cell carcinoma.
The doctors continued to perform the closed suture restoration of the renal pelvis and renal parenchyma for the patient. They then checked for hemostasis, closed the incision, and completed the surgery after nearly 3 hours.
Kidney cancer can be detected early through ultrasound
Currently, after 5 days of surgery, the patient is stable, urine is clear yellow, drainage tube has been removed, surgical wound is dry, kidney function is good, abdominal ultrasound shows no abnormalities.
The medical team took 3 hours to perform endoscopic surgery on the patient.
According to Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Can Tho Central General Hospital, kidney cancer is the third most common type of urinary cancer, and often has no obvious signs or symptoms in the early stages. Therefore, most cases of kidney cancer are discovered by chance when patients undergo a general health check. The rest are only discovered when the disease has reached an advanced stage, with symptoms such as severe pain in the lumbar region accompanied by frequent blood in the urine or a palpable mass in the abdomen.
According to Dr. Loc, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy is applied to cases of small kidney cancer still localized in the kidney tissue (size < 7 cm) and will bring high treatment efficiency. In the world and in major centers in our country, this is a highly safe, proactive, minimally invasive technique, bringing many benefits to patients during the recovery process (less post-operative pain, small surgical scars, short hospital stay), saving treatment costs and most importantly, preserving the kidney, helping patients maintain a quality life in the long term...
To detect the disease as early as possible, especially in cases of silent cancer progression, doctors recommend that when there are unusual symptoms in the urinary system, patients should go to specialized medical facilities for examination and timely diagnosis and treatment. At the same time, regular health check-ups and abdominal ultrasound are simple, inexpensive techniques that can help detect early-stage kidney tumors.
