Overcoming seasonality, developing tourism in the North Central region

The natural and human tourism resources of the North Central region are rich and diverse, but the tourism product system is not unique and distinctive and is greatly affected by weather and climate factors... which is a big challenge for the locality to develop year-round tourism.

This is the situation stated at the Workshop on orientation for tourism product development to overcome seasonality in the North Central Coast region, held on September 24. The event was organized by the Institute for Tourism Development Research, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, to propose solutions to overcome seasonality and promote tourism development.

Seasonality in tourism is the cyclical fluctuation in the number of tourists visiting a tourist destination. This fluctuation is affected by factors such as: Weather, holidays, cultural events, market demand and the "supply" and "demand" factors of tourism services and goods...

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute for Tourism Development Research, affirmed that tourism activities are not continuous throughout the year (seasonal tourism) in the North Central Coast region are strongly affected by human and natural factors. Understanding the impact factors and impact mechanisms is an important basis for proposing solutions to overcome seasonality, contributing to improving the effectiveness of tourism activities. Understanding seasonality can help tourism managers, local authorities and stakeholders develop appropriate strategies to minimize negative impacts and take advantage of opportunities from seasonality to promote tourism development.

With 9 UNESCO-recognized world heritages, including cultural, natural, tangible and intangible heritages, the North Central region holds a very important position in the system of developing tours and tourism routes in Vietnam. Currently, the highway infrastructure of the regional connecting axes is gradually being completed, and air, rail and sea routes are increasingly improved, facilitating travel. However, the region's tourism products are still developing in a fragmented manner, lacking connectivity, and the tourism value chain has not been firmly defined, reducing attractiveness and efficiency.

In the North Central region, there are many popular types of tourism but most of them are affected by seasonality. Beach tourism and beach resorts are often crowded in the summer and almost empty in the winter. Root tourism, sightseeing and learning about history and revolution depend on time frames and events. Heritage tourism, sightseeing and resorts can take place all year round, but in the winter months, the cold and rainy weather limits tourists' ability to travel and experience. Ecotourism and community tourism have not been invested in adequately. Festival and religious tourism often focuses on the months after Tet. Coastal island exploration tourism is limited because the near-shore islands have very small areas, freshwater sources are not abundant, and investment in exploitation is difficult to expand. Medical tourism and health recovery tourism often focuses on places with hot mineral water sources for the purpose of resting and treating diseases...

According to Master Hoang Dao Bao Cam (Institute for Tourism Development Research), the tourism business results of the provinces in the North Central region are currently not commensurate with their potential. Therefore, local authorities and tourism management agencies need to identify overcoming seasonality as an important task for sustainable tourism development, as well as for local socio-economic development. In addition, localities need to develop a variety of tourism products (events, festivals, entertainment, sports, medical treatment, health care, experiential tourism, culture, history, adventure, spirituality, etc.). Along with diversifying the domestic tourist market, localities develop the international tourist market to overcome the imbalance between seasons and tourist destinations.

To reduce the seasonality of tourism, Dr. Vu Van Tuyen, Director of Travelogy Vietnam Company, emphasized the need to orient seasonal tourists, develop promotional and marketing plans during the low season, diversify tourism types, strengthen tourism cooperation, and proactively train human resources...

In addition, localities can expand activities in local agricultural product markets (OCOP), visiting and experiencing craft villages, exploiting tourism associated with sports, creative competitions for groups of guests; medical tourism, refreshing the spirit. At the same time, in the low season, for localities in the North Central region, it is necessary to calculate and promote the exploitation of weekend tourism; coastal cultural space in the low season; increase propaganda "The sea is not cold in winter", "The sea at night is not dark" ... to create suitable tourism products, promoting local tourism development.
