A St. Louis-based court has granted a request from several Republican-led states to completely halt the U.S. Department of Education’s plan to reduce student debt. In June, Judge John Ross of the lower court in St. Louis ruled that the Department of Education could continue to forgive student debt under the Savings for Valuable Education (SAVE) program, but did not block the program entirely.
Last week, state attorneys general, led by Andrew Bailey (Missouri), asked the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to block the remaining portions of the SAVE plan. The court ruled in favor of the proposal.
The plan has more generous terms than previous income-driven repayment plans, reducing monthly payments for eligible borrowers and allowing those with loans of $12,000 or less to have their debt forgiven after 10 years.
On social media, Mr. Bailey welcomed the decision of the appeals court. Meanwhile, the US Department of Education has not commented on the above information.
