(CLO) A serious accident occurred off the coast of Mumbai city, when an Indian naval ship collided with a ferry carrying more than 100 passengers, killing at least 13 people. Search and rescue efforts are still continuing, according to local authorities.

According to the Indian Navy, the naval ship suffered an engine failure during a trial in the Mumbai port. The incident caused the ship to lose control and collide with the Neelkamal ferry, a private boat that was on its way to the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After the collision, the ferry capsized, throwing dozens of passengers into the sea. Thirteen people died, including a navy member and two representatives from the equipment manufacturer involved in testing the ship.

At least 13 people were killed in the collision between a naval vessel and a ship in India.

More than 100 people were rescued, many of whom swam to safety or were rescued by nearby vessels. Two seriously injured people were taken to the nearest hospital.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and condolences to the families of the victims. He also announced compensation of 200,000 rupees (about $2,356) for each family of the deceased and 50,000 rupees (about $590) for the injured.

“The speedboat hit our ferry, water started pouring in and the ferry capsized. The driver asked us to wear life jackets. I swam for about 15 minutes before being rescued by another boat,” a passenger on the ferry told ABP Majha.

Images from local media showed chaotic scenes as passengers clung to debris as they waited to be rescued. Search teams continued to work in rough seas.

The Neelkamal ferry is heading to the Elephanta Caves, about an hour's boat ride from the Gateway of India port. The caves were built in the 5th or 6th century and are one of Mumbai's top tourist attractions.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has pledged all possible support to the victims and their families. “We are heartbroken by this loss and will ensure that the families of the victims receive the necessary assistance,” he said.
