The Israeli military announced on October 1 that soldiers had begun a troop deployment to Lebanon, according to NBC News.
"A few hours ago, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces - Editor's note) began limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence, targeting Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon," the Israeli military announced.

Israel said the operation was aimed at protecting its citizens living in the north, along the Lebanese border.
Earlier, Lebanese media reported heavy shelling in the border village of Wazzani while the Lebanese army withdrew its forces from positions along the border, heading north at least 5 km.

The Israeli military also declared the country's northern border a "closed military zone" that prohibits civilians from entering. The military urged civilians not to publish information about troop movements, while some politicians posted posts suggesting the operation had begun, according to The Times of Israel .
Israeli officials have informed the United States of plans to send troops into Lebanon but will be limited in scope and duration. Two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News that the operation appears to have begun.
Israeli media reported that the security cabinet approved the next phase of the campaign against Hezbollah. During the meeting, some ministers were upset that US officials leaked information about the operation after being updated by Israel.

Meanwhile in Beirut, the Israeli military carried out at least six airstrikes in southern areas in the early hours of October 1, AFP quoted Lebanese security officials as saying. The airstrikes came after the Israeli military called on residents living in the Hezbollah stronghold of Dahiyeh to evacuate.
U.S. officials say Washington has not seen any Iranian weapons movements that would signal an imminent response, but Tehran is believed to be ready to act quickly if it decides to respond, according to NBC News. Iran has also signaled to the U.S. that it does not want a wider war.
