Gifted Secondary School of University of Education announces stressful admission method

This year, the University of Education Gifted Secondary School enrolls 105 students (equivalent to 3 classes). Candidates must have a comprehensive assessment of primary schooleducation at the end of the school year at the level of good completion or higher and have valid records.

The school recruits students in 2 rounds, in which round 1 is preliminary selection, round 2 evaluates students' overall ability.

The preliminary round is evaluated by scores according to the following criteria: scores from excellent and talented students' exams, based on the results of participation in social activities, talent competitions in culture, arts, and sports at the provincial, national, regional, and international levels.

The scoring is as follows: first prize is 5 points, second prize is 4 points, third prize is 3 points, consolation prize is 2 points.

The results of the summary assessment of students' education at the end of the school year in each primary school class are 3 points for excellent completion and 2 points for good completion.

Preliminary score = excellent student exam score + 5-year primary school study results.

Students with a total preliminary score of 12 points or more will be able to participate in the second round of capacity assessment.

In round 2, the school uses a comprehensive competency assessment. The assessment content is knowledge of cultural, artistic, and sports subjects in the primary education program...

The form of assessment is an objective test combined with an essay test. Candidates do the test directly on paper, in 120 minutes, and are graded on a 100-point scale.

Candidates who are shortlisted for admission must meet the admission requirements and not violate the regulations to the extent that their results will be canceled.

The school will consider admission based on the score of the comprehensive assessment test in the following way: from the student with the highest admission score down until the quota is met. In case there are many candidates with the same admission score at the last quota, the admission board will consider and decide.

Admission fee is 500,000 VND/student, including: registration fee and first round preliminary selection fee: 100,000 VND/student; comprehensive capacity assessment fee: 400,000 VND/student. This fee is paid once at the same time as submitting the application for the exam, the school will not refund if the candidate drops out of the exam.

The Gifted Secondary School of the University of Education notes that based on the results of the comprehensive capacity assessment and certificates of winning prizes in social activities, talent competitions organized within the province, nationwide, regional and international (if any) in cultural, artistic and sports subjects, the students will be placed in classes appropriate to their abilities and strengths.

Upon entering the school, students will study the 2018 general secondary school program as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training; at the same time, participate in experiential, career guidance and talent development programs in the form of clubs in the following fields: mathematics and information technology; natural sciences and technology; social sciences and arts.

Estimated tuition fee is 4 million VND/student/month. The school will announce the specific tuition fee after receiving guidance from the Ministry of Education and Training on tuition fee collection for secondary schools with regular self-financing (collecting tuition for 9 months/school year).

As Thanh Nien has reported, the Education Law prohibits the system of specialized schools and selective classes at the primary and secondary levels; Circular 29 stipulates the prohibition of extra teaching at the primary level, but localities and universities compete to open "gifted" and "high-quality" secondary schools with stressful admission methods, requiring a lot of review from primary school, making public opinion lose faith that extra teaching and learning at primary school will be "put to rest".

Many northern provinces such as Bac Ninh and Bac Giang also have key junior high schools or high-quality classes in public junior high schools.

In addition to the specialized high school block of the National University, schools such as the University of Education, the University of Foreign Languages, and the University of Education also open high schools and middle schools. Notably, the University of Education recently opened a Gifted Middle School, raising curiosity about the admission method, educational program as well as the compliance with the provisions of the law on the current national education system.
