Dinh Ngoc Diep takes care of Nguyen Dynasty ceramics and costumes
The main character Quoc Huy shared his surprise when entering the interior scene of the new film produced by Dinh Ngoc Diep - Detective Kien - The Headless Case . This is the film that marks 20 years of director Victor Vu's career. These products are all hand-painted by artisans, designed in the style of Nguyen Dynasty ceramics, then aged to give them the color of time.

"Not just one or two, but thousands of products to decorate the pottery workshop, the mandarin's house, the rooms... Looking at them, I feel like the space I'm acting in is very real. When I act more comfortably, it's easier to get into the character's psychology," Quoc Huy said.
Producer Dinh Ngoc Diep said that Detective Kien - The Headless Mystery has the support of a famous ceramic company. Because ceramics are a clue in the investigation, investing in ceramics is also an important part of the film's production. If in The Last Wife, there were ceramic products with signature designs, this time it is crackle glaze ceramics. There are about 1,000 ceramic products appearing in the film, designed according to the film's content.
Costumes continue to be another expense in this new film by Victor Vu. The amount of fabric used is very large because it uses the same small-sized fabric as before. In the film, the character Nga has a garden of fabric, viewers can see this small-sized fabric hanging up. This is all Nha Xa silk, a famous silk village. The supporting characters - villagers use raw fabric of the Tay people.

Dinh Ngoc Diep said: "All the fabrics in the film are hand-dyed very meticulously. If I bought the fabric at the market and sewed it, it would be new and would look fake on screen. So I had to dip the fabric and then dye it to create the most realistic color possible. Only when I touch it will I know that everything I wear is real."
In particular, despite having the same cultural space and costumes as The Last Wife , producer Dinh Ngoc Diep still had to make new costumes for Detective Kien - The Headless Case . "I can only reuse 10-20% of the costumes from the previous film, which are the costumes from the previous film for the masses. I also did not keep much of the costumes from the previous film after the film, because the two producers were different, so the inheritance of the costumes was not much...", the producer said.
Increase pre-production time
According to Dinh Ngoc Diep, Detective Kien - the headless mystery has many layered costumes. "Like an outfit I wear has at least 3 layers, sometimes 4 layers. A character like Diep has about ten sets of clothes, so multiply that by 3, it's dozens of sets of clothes for one character. In total, about 900 - 1,000 costumes are needed," said Dinh Ngoc Diep.
Dinh Ngoc Diep has produced many of Victor Vu's films.

The art director of Detective Kien - the headless mystery is the person who accompanied director Victor Vu through films such as Blue Eyes and The Last Wife . According to Dinh Ngoc Diep, this is also the person who researched and decided on the cultural exchange in the film. "For example, Mrs. Hai Man wears her hair in a Southern style but the film's setting is the North. That is creativity on an existing foundation. Cultural inheritance is always diverse and rich."
According to the producer, the surprising thing is that the costume team only had 4 people but there were scenes with hundreds of people. "The costume team sometimes only slept a few hours a day," said Dinh Ngoc Diep.
With the elaborate costumes, Quoc Huy said that the actors' movements were difficult. "When wearing the ancient costumes, we have to have the demeanor of the ancients, like the way we drink tea, talk calmly, the gestures of our hands and feet, the way we walk, stand, hold the sword, ride a horse... Everything has to be practiced. The film crew has to invite someone who understands history, that person works with all the actors in the crew. It takes 3-4 sessions," Quoc Huy said.
This leads to the pre-production stage having to be careful so that when going to the scene, there is no time wasted. For Quoc Huy, although he has been detective Kien since The Last Wife , he still participates in the pre-production diligently. In The Last Wife, the horse riding scene where detective Kien only goes normally, but now he has to ride the horse at high speed on a bumpy road. He had to practice a lot.

"The film crew contacted Dai Nam racetrack to let me practice with racehorses, so that when I go to the North, I can ride horses like I ride a motorbike. Because the racehorses at Dai Nam are the best. Practice riding horses, then practice action scenes. Do that scene myself, jump from a height of 5-6m...", Quoc Huy said.
"When I dance, I wear shoes and dress like the ancients, so it's hard to move quickly. I wear 2-3 layers of clothes. I have to practice so I don't get caught. Just getting something caught on the railing can cause injury. If there's a problem, the crew will have to wait a long time. Waiting time is very expensive, so it requires a lot more money to set up," said the male lead in the new film produced by Dinh Ngoc Diep.
