According to information from the hospital, the female patient, residing in Thuy Nguyen City (Hai Phong), was taken to the emergency room by her family about 1 hour after the incident.
Earlier, after dinner, the patient felt choked, nauseous and suspected that there was a foreign object stuck in his throat. In a panic, he used a toothbrush to try to remove the foreign object, but unfortunately swallowed the toothbrush down his esophagus.
Immediately upon receiving the patient, doctors from the Department of Gastroenterology (Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital) performed an emergency endoscopy and removed the toothbrush intact, ensuring the patient's safety and leaving no serious injuries.
According to the hospital's specialist, a toothbrush is a large, long-shaped object with a sharp and hard tip, which can cause scratches, esophageal tears, and even esophageal perforation, leading to complications of mediastinal infection, septic shock, and life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital recommends that people who show signs of swallowing a foreign object should immediately go to the nearest medical facility for examination and treatment.
In particular, people should absolutely not use their hands or objects such as chopsticks, brushes, etc. to poke or interfere in the throat, nor should they try to swallow food in the hope of pushing foreign objects down into the stomach, because this action increases the risk of serious complications.
