Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy launched Ghaem and Almas missiles during a recent exercise in the Gulf, the IRNA news agency reported on January 27. The missiles were launched from Mohajer-6 and Ababil-5 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), destroying simulated targets during the exercise.

The Ghaem and Almas missiles are precision-guided missiles developed by the Iranian Defense Ministry. The IRGC did not specify what AI features these missiles have.

The IRGC conducted a series of military exercises in the southwestern provinces of Bushehr and Khuzestan and the Gulf on January 24, according to AFP.

The two provinces have major oil facilities. Bushehr is also home to Iran’s nuclear power plant. IRGC naval commander Alireza Tangsiri said the drills simulated defending such sensitive facilities. He said Iran is developing cruise missiles with a range of over 1,000 km using AI technology.

The deployment of the missiles comes months after Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called for the country to master artificial intelligence.

The United States used to be Iran's main ally and arms supplier. However, since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran has severed ties with the United States and developed many advanced missiles and UAVs.

The AI missile exercise comes just days after Donald Trump was re-elected as US president. The first-term leader withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions as part of a plan to increase maximum pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Last week, Mr Trump said he hoped he would not have to attack Iranian nuclear facilities and called for a deal with Tehran.
