The attack, codenamed "Operation True Promise 2," was carried out in response to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last July; the recent assassinations of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian General Abbas Nilforoushan in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
In this attack, about 181-200 ballistic missiles were launched, including a number of Fattah-1 supersonic medium-range missiles.
The missiles targeted the headquarters of the Mossad intelligence agency, Nevatim Air Base, Hatzerim Air Base, key radar facilities and military camps near the Gaza Strip.
The Israel Defense Forces announced shortly after the attack that they had intercepted “a large number” of incoming Iranian missiles with the help of the United States. It was also reported that Israel had received help from the Jordanian military.
In a statement released the following day, the Israel Defense Forces acknowledged that several Iranian missiles had hit air bases but said no aircraft or major infrastructure had been damaged.
According to the Israeli military, the attack damaged office buildings and other maintenance areas on the base but did not affect Israeli Air Force operations.
No Israeli Air Force aircraft were damaged in the attack and all missile attacks on Israeli air bases were deemed “ineffective” by the IDF, meaning they did not cause any harm to the continued operations of the IAF. The Israeli military also said the attack did not cause damage to fighter jets, drones, other aircraft, ammunition or critical infrastructure.
This was Iran's second direct attack on Israel. The first attack took place on the night of April 13 and 14.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Tehran's attack on the country was a "huge mistake" and that it would "pay a price". Israeli media reported that Israel was likely to attack oil facilities in Iran.
For its part, Iran has warned that any Israeli attack will be met with an even stronger response, with reports that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has ordered retaliatory strikes on Israeli infrastructure. Tehran and its allies have also warned the US and its regional allies against supporting any Israeli attack on Iranian territory.
