The incident occurred in the early morning of March 25 at the General Silvestras Zukauskas training ground, near the Lithuanian town of Pabrade, when an M88 Hercules carrying four US soldiers went missing during a training exercise. The area is located about 10 km from the Belarusian border.
The US Army confirmed that the bodies of three soldiers were found inside the vehicle. The search for the remaining soldier is ongoing. The identities of the soldiers have not been released, but they are from the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart in Georgia.
The recovery operation was hampered by high water levels, thick mud and soft terrain. Rescuers had to use specialized equipment to pump out water and reinforce the ground before divers could access and attach steel cables to the vehicle to pull it ashore.
Minister Sakaliene stressed that Lithuania mobilized all resources from the military to the interior ministry to support the search as soon as information about the incident was received. She also expressed deep sympathy to the families of the soldiers involved.
