During an executive order signing session in the Oval Office on the evening of March 31, when asked about this possibility, Mr. Trump replied: "I would love that... It would be an interesting confrontation. I would like that."

Mr Trump also mentioned that many people have suggested he run for a third term, but he has not seriously considered the possibility. "I have never looked into it. They say there is a way to do it, but I don't know about it."

The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1951, prohibits presidents from serving more than two terms.

In an interview earlier Sunday, Mr. Trump suggested that there might be ways to circumvent the law and serve a third term, such as Vice President JD Vance running for president and then stepping down so that Mr. Trump could take over. However, he stressed that it was too early to think about that possibility and that he was focused on finishing his current term well.

Republicans have introduced a constitutional amendment to allow Mr Trump to serve a third term, but passing such an amendment would face challenges due to opposition from Democrats.
