What upgrades will the iPhone 15 have?

At 0:00 on September 13 (Vietnam time), or 10:00 on September 12, Apple will introduce a new generation of smartphones called the iPhone 15 series at the Steve Jobs Theater on the company's headquarters campus in California (USA). Although it has not been officially launched yet, users can now somewhat visualize the product through a series of rumors from knowledgeable sources and data from the accessory manufacturer.

It can be said with almost certainty that the iPhone 15 generation will not bring any breakthrough changes in overall design while still keeping the square frame similar to the previous iPhone 12, 13, 14 series. The most notable change is the curved edges. The two Pro models are rumored to use a titanium frame instead of stainless steel like their "seniors".

This material change makes the device lighter and is said to be more durable than steel. Another adjustment is that the silent mode switch on the left side of the device will be converted into an Action button, which can be customized according to the user's wishes.

All four models will feature the Dynamic Island pill display like last year's iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, completely eliminating the notch. However, only the high-end version will have a 120 Hz LTPO display, with always-on display (AOD) functionality. In addition, the screen bezel is also thinner than the previous generation, reaching a thickness of 1.55mm.

iPhone 15 only has slight design adjustments, no major changes.

In terms of color, many rumors agree that the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will come in 5 colors including black, white, yellow, pink, and blue, while the Pro and Pro Max will come in black, silver white, titanium gray, and dark blue. Information about the iPhone 15 Ultra model is still unclear whether this is a separate version or just another name for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Replace the traditional Lightning port with USB-C

This is a definite fact about the new iPhone 15 series, as they will be the first iPhone models to abandon the Lightning port. This was confirmed by Apple itself last year, a move to comply with new regulations of the European Union (EU). The device will be sold with a USB-C cable (possibly the same color as the device), but users may need to buy additional compatible accessories instead of using the old device. Many manufacturers have also confirmed the USB-C port, and are ready to have batches of cables using this connection certified by Apple MFi.

Replacing the connection port and charging port means the iPhone can receive charging power faster than before, but it is possible that Apple will control the charging/data transfer speed to create a difference between the Pro version and the regular version.

Camera

The camera is rumored to be one of the highlights and worth the money of this year's iPhone 15 series. Accordingly, the sensor cluster will be upgraded strongly in both the regular and Pro versions. The iPhone 15 Pro Max could be Apple's first smartphone equipped with a periscope camera, capable of 5x to 6x zoom compared to a maximum of 3x like the current iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max.

2023 could also mark Apple's decision to return to its policy of differentiating capabilities between the iPhone Pro and Pro Max instead of doing the same thing as in recent years.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus may use a stacked sensor technology developed by Sony, helping the device capture more light and improve dynamic contrast range, increasing detail.

A17 Bionic processor

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are expected to use the A17 Bionic, an upgrade from the previous generation's A16 Bionic. Notably, this will be the first chip manufactured on a commercial 3nm process. This latest technology allows for the integration of more transistors than the A16 Bionic on the 4nm process currently available on previous iPhones.

A series of iPhone 15 series mold models with full color versions appeared online near the time of the device's launch.

The A17 Bionic will have 6 CPUs and 6 GPUs, while the A16 has the same number of CPU cores but 1 less GPU. Of course, the CPU speed of the new chip is also faster than the previous generation. Not only does it bring superior performance, the new technology also consumes less power, contributing to longer battery life.

Battery

All four versions of the iPhone 15 series have larger batteries than their predecessors. Leaked sources confirm that Apple uses new stacked battery technology, which appears in the electric vehicle industry. Thanks to that, the iPhone 15 has an 18% increase in battery capacity compared to the iPhone 14 (3,877 mAh and 3,279 mAh), the iPhone 15 Plus reaches 4,912 mAh, the highest of the current iPhone and almost on par with Android smartphones on the market.

The two iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max versions have battery capacities of 3,650 mAh and 4,852 mAh, 14% and 12% higher than the 14 Pro (3,200 mAh) and 14 Pro Max (4,323 mAh) respectively.

Selling price

With the above upgrades, Apple is said to be unable to keep the price of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max the same as the previous model when it was launched. Some market analysts believe that the iPhone 15 Pro will be sold at $ 1,099, an increase of $ 100 compared to the iPhone 14 Pro model, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will increase by $ 200, reaching $ 1,299 for the standard version. The price change mainly comes from the material used to make the frame and the camera technology.

At the same time, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus remain at the same price as the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. As usual, Apple will reduce the price of the two standard smartphones of 2022 by about $100, while stopping the sale of the Pro pair.
