Apple has just released iOS 18.1 beta 4 with a notable improvement for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max series. Specifically, this update brings the ability to capture space photos, enhancing the camera experience on last year's flagship models. This is a feature that Apple introduced for the iPhone 16 series at the recent launch event, but will also be available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max devices.
Apple adds a "Spaces" option to the Camera app.
Space photography and video capture features
Since its launch last year, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have supported space video recording. However, with the iOS 18.1 update, Apple has added a "Space" option in the Camera app. This makes it easy for users to switch between space video recording and space photography with just a few simple steps.
Apple explains that space photos and videos are capable of capturing exceptional depth, providing a more immersive experience when viewed on the Apple Vision Pro device. When shooting space videos, Apple recommends holding the iPhone in a horizontal and steady orientation for best results. Space videos are recorded in 1080p at 30 frames per second, and one minute of video can take up about 130MB of storage. Space photos, on the other hand, are smaller, measuring about 5MB each.
Integration with Apple Vision Pro and visionOS 2
Another notable feature is that users can view spatial photos and videos directly on Apple Vision Pro, providing a deeper and more realistic visual experience. In addition, visionOS 2 – the new operating system released this week – also allows users to create spatial photos from any image in their library.
Introducing Apple Intelligence and iOS 18.1
iOS 18.1 is currently in beta for developers, but is expected to be officially released in October. At the iPhone 16 launch event last week, Apple also confirmed that iOS 18.1 will be the first version to integrate Apple Intelligence features, promising many improvements in performance and user experience.
