Fears of tightening early admissions or new-oriented exams are the reasons why some 12th graders decide to study during Tet.
Today, January 23, students in many provinces and cities began the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday. During the holiday, many 12th graders said they would be busy with their study plans. This is in contrast to the carefree Tet holiday trend that Thanh Nien has recorded in previous years.
PRESSURE "EVERYTHING IS NEW"
Registering for the IELTS test right after the Tet holiday, Pham Nguyen Hoang Ngan, a 12th grade student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), shared that in the coming time, she plans to spend 2-3 hours every morning to review, mainly focusing on listening and reading skills to improve her score to 7.5. "Because I don't take extra classes, self-study is quite a struggle, requiring a lot of effort and discipline," Ngan said.
The student said she mainly studies on her own through online platforms like YouTube and online documents, and uses artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT to answer questions. Ngan will also use ChatGPT to grade her writing and correct grammar, and provide vocabulary for her speaking. In the afternoon, Ngan will do her homework and reinforce math lessons, and in the evening she will spend time relaxing with her family to recharge. "There will be times when I get caught up in the fun atmosphere, so if I can't study for several hours straight, I will still review a little bit every day, even if it's only 25 minutes, to maintain the habit," Ngan said.
"This year, the new general education program has many changes, so both me and my friends are worried because getting the high scores we want will be more difficult, especially in the short answer section and how to calculate the score for true or false questions in math," Ngan explained the reason for choosing to study during Tet.
Tran Hong An, a 12th grader at a high school in Hanoi, hopes to be admitted to the University of Foreign Languages (Hanoi National University). Han said that even though the Tet holiday is coming, she will continue to maintain her review schedule from morning to night in the coming time to keep up her passion for studying, only going out more on New Year's Eve and the first day of Tet. "This year, I am quite worried because many exams will change, from the capacity assessment exam (ĐGNL) to the high school graduation exam, so I have to be careful to find sample questions online that match the new structure. Not to mention that the early admission process being tightened could also cause the upcoming competition rate to increase a lot," An worried.
Minh Hoang, a 12th grader at Bui Thi Xuan High School (Lam Dong), who is planning to take the first round of the National University Entrance Exam, said he has just registered for an online course to get familiar with the exam format and review during the upcoming Tet holiday. "I started reviewing for this exam quite late compared to my friends, so I have to work twice as hard. This is the only time I have more time to review because after Tet we have to worry about the mid-term exam," the male student said.
"During this time, I will also focus on reviewing literature, because now we need to have more knowledge and skills to write a good, complete essay, instead of just memorizing and copying like before," Hoang shared.
REVIEW IN THE "STUDY IS STUDY, PLAY IS PLAY" STYLE
Master Bui Van Cong, an online teacher of the National High School Exam in Ho Chi Minh City, estimates that about 200-300 students will attend the online test-solving livestream sessions he organizes during the upcoming Tet holidays, including New Year's Eve and the first days of Tet. A common concern of students, according to this teacher, is that many schools have not yet finalized their enrollment plans, causing students to not dare to bet entirely on a certain exam but have to study for all of them.
That is also the reason why many students plan to study during Tet. To study effectively during Tet holiday, Master Cong advises students to choose a fixed time frame to dedicate to studying, for example from 9pm to 11pm every day. During this time, students should turn off their phones and avoid social networks. "Study when studying, play when playing", Mr. Cong emphasized.
Regarding the National University of Ho Chi Minh City’s National High School Exam, Mr. Cong advised candidates to spend the Tet holiday to improve their knowledge learned in previous years, especially math. Because the sample exam published by this university shows that the proportion of questions in the 10th and 11th grade has increased compared to before. At the same time, Master Cong commented that candidates should also improve their English skills because this is the part that most students still perform poorly.
Master Tran Ha Phuong, a literature teacher at Luong Dinh Cua High School (Can Tho City), advised students to know how to use their time wisely, ensuring that they can both review for exams and celebrate Tet, avoiding activities without a clear goal or direction. "You also need to keep a relaxed mindset, and should spend time on other activities such as cleaning your room, receiving guests, going on spring outings, visiting grandparents, teachers... on the occasion of Tet," Ms. Phuong shared.
As for literature, the female master suggests that students should carefully re-read the textbook content, especially the literature knowledge section, to understand and grasp the characteristics of the genre and general formulas, and then apply them in practice instead of learning by rote or guessing questions. If the exam is only for graduation purposes, students should spend about 2 hours/day to review. This number should increase to 3 hours for students who choose a university entrance exam combination that includes literature.
"During Tet, don't forget to sleep and eat healthily to have good health, as well as be aware and responsible for studying, aiming to conquer important exams in the coming time," Master Phuong emphasized.
