Mr. NVQ (residing in Ninh Hoa Town, Khanh Hoa Province) shared that 6 months ago, while lifting heavy things while working in Hai Phong, he felt pain and discovered bleeding in the anal area. He went to a hospital for examination and was diagnosed with bleeding due to hemorrhoids and bone and joint disease, and was prescribed internal medicine treatment with medication. Because he had a history of hemorrhoids and had previously had a few times of passing small amounts of blood in his stool, he did not go for further examination and only took the medication as directed. However, after taking the medication, he still occasionally had bloody stools.
Not long after that, during a routine health check-up, he was accidentally diagnosed with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, the bloody stools continued, accompanied by a feeling of fatigue. He decided to go to a large hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination. There, the doctors discovered that he had an adrenal tumor and ordered him to be hospitalized for treatment. After 10 days of medical treatment with medication, he was discharged to Khanh Hoa, but the bloody stools did not improve.
At the end of March, he was transferred to Gia An 115 Hospital for treatment.

Multidisciplinary coordination, surgery on 4 tumors at the same time for the patient
At Gia An 115 Hospital, after conducting clinical and paraclinical examinations, doctors discovered that he had 4 tumors in his abdomen, including: 1 small intestine tumor (6x7 cm), 1 mesojejunal tumor (3x4 cm), 1 mesojejunal tumor (5x7 cm), 1 large retroperitoneal tumor, surrounding and invading the right adrenal gland, measuring up to 10x11 cm. The tumors all had central necrosis.
According to Master - Doctor Nguyen The Toan, Head of Surgery Department, Gia An 115 Hospital, the case of NVQ patients, especially when having small intestine tumors, mesenteric tumors, and adrenal tumors at the same time, is a rare disease, difficult to detect but dangerous. Large small intestine tumors and mesenteric tumors can lead to complications such as intestinal obstruction, mesenteric infarction causing intestinal necrosis. In addition, prolonged tumor bleeding will cause anemia, fatigue, weakened immune system and increase the risk of other diseases.
Meanwhile, the adrenal gland is an important endocrine gland of the body, with the function of secreting hormones that regulate water-electrolyte balance, regulate blood pressure... Adrenal tumors that are not treated effectively can cause water and electrolyte disorders, fatigue, high blood pressure, and even threaten the patient's life.
Master - Doctor Nguyen The Toan said that surgery to remove tumors is very necessary to protect the life and health of the patient. However, this is a complicated surgery because it must combine the removal of adrenal tumors, mesenteric tumors, and small intestine resection, on the basis of the patient's hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, adrenal tumors can cause blood pressure to increase suddenly during anesthesia and surgery, if not well controlled, it can easily endanger the patient's life.
The surgery was successful after 3 hours.
After agreeing on the plan, on March 29, the surgical team proceeded to remove the retroperitoneal tumor and the right adrenal gland, then successively removed two tumors of the ileal mesentery and jejunum, and finally removed the small intestine containing the tumor, about 30 cm long. The surgery lasted nearly 3 hours and was successful. After the surgery, the patient's condition was stable and he recovered well.
“I am so happy, I only felt pain for 1-2 days after the surgery, then I felt much better and my spirit was relieved because I had let go of the burden of the past few months,” Mr. NVQ happily shared.
Dr. Nguyen The Toan recommends that symptoms such as bloating and bloody stools can warn of many common diseases such as hemorrhoids, gastroenteritis, colitis, etc., but do not rule out rarer diseases such as the case of NVQ patients. Therefore, when there are prolonged abnormal symptoms, patients should not only seek early examination but also choose hospitals with thorough investment, comprehensive diagnostic capabilities and close coordination between many specialties. This helps ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, avoiding missing diseases or delays in treatment.
