Artist Dang Thanh Huyen tells family stories through paintings

“Where Time Slows Down” is not only an exhibition of paintings but also a place where the female artist born in 1984 tells her story - about family, about memories, about life and silence. With oil and silk works, mostly large-scale portraits, this exhibition marks a more mature stage in the art of artist Dang Thanh Huyen.

After “Huong Sac Ha Thanh” (2019) - the first solo exhibition with 31 works praising the scenery of Hanoi and the beauty of women; “Nhip thoi gian” (2019) - a memorable mark when Dang Thanh Huyen exhibited works with two masters of painting, Professor Pham Cong Thanh and painter Tran Huy Oanh; this exhibition of the artist continues to have silk paintings, but exploits diverse materials with new experiments to express emotions.

Artist Dang Thanh Huyen's paintings do not stop at describing the shape, but also try to express the mood, emotions and stories behind the characters.

The main school of painting that the female artist pursues can be seen as a fusion between realism and impressionism, with the use of emotional colors and light. The portraits in this exhibition tend to minimize details, emphasizing key points for viewers to feel and imagine - an approach with a slight abstraction, giving the paintings more inner depth.

“To have a solo exhibition, especially a big one like Where Time Slows Down , I had to spend many years painting, to put my emotions into each brushstroke, to express my perspective through each painting. Many sleepless nights, times of struggling over an unsatisfactory line… were rewarded with moments of happiness when seeing the work touch the hearts of viewers”, shared artist Dang Thanh Huyen.

Currently living with his family in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), the artist took the trouble to transport more than 50 works, including many large-scale portraits, from the coastal city to Hanoi to hold this second solo exhibition.

The exhibition "Where Time Slows Down" takes place at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts from March 22-29, 2025.
