Tuchel did not sing the England national anthem. |
The moment Tuchel did not sing the English national anthem angered many fans and criticized the German coach. However, the former Chelsea coach said he did not sing "God Save The King" at Wembley because he felt he "didn't have the right" to do so.
Tuchel explained that he wanted to fully integrate himself into the England squad before taking part in traditional rituals such as singing the national anthem.
"I think, first of all, the English national anthem is very powerful, emotional and meaningful. In addition, I could not be prouder to stand on the pitch, leading the football stars of this country. The national anthem has a great meaning but to sing it, I have to build the necessary cohesion and be effective in my work," Tuchel shared.
"It's not just about singing. I think I have to earn the right to sing the English national anthem. When I build a strong team, I think that's when I'm qualified to sing the English national anthem," Tuchel added.
Tuchel is the third non-English coach to lead the national team, after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. Previously, England's caretaker coach Lee Carsley was also criticised for refusing to sing the national anthem.
Tuchel has also faced criticism over the number of games he has attended at club level, but he has defended his stance by claiming that he has watched more games than people think, despite frequently travelling between Germany and England for work.
In his debut match, Tuchel helped England beat Albania 2-0. On March 24, the "Three Lions" will have their next match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Latvia.
