Vietnam women's sepak takraw team won gold medal in 4-person team event. |
On the evening of March 21 (Vietnam time) in India, the Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team won the championship in the quadrant event at the ISTAF World Cup. Coach Tran Thi Vui and her students defeated Thailand in the final match. Meanwhile, in the men's quadrant event, the Vietnamese team also met Thailand in the final but lost after 2 rounds and only won the silver medal.
The Vietnamese women's sepak takraw team has 4 main players: Nguyen Thi My, Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi Yen, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, and 2 reserve players: Nguyen Thi Khanh Ly and Vu Thi Van Anh. After 2 dramatic matches, the Vietnamese team won 15-13, 15-13.
This is the first time Vietnamese sepak takraw has won a gold medal at a world-level tournament. In previous ISTAF World Cups, Vietnamese representatives have only won 5 silver medals. Up to the 2025 tournament, the gold medals belonged to Thailand (9 times), Malaysia (2 times), and India (1 time).
At the 32nd SEA Games held in Cambodia in 2023, the 4-man squad of the Vietnamese team only won a silver medal. At that time, Nguyen Thi My and her teammates lost to Thailand in the final match. However, the Vietnamese sepak takraw team still won a gold medal in the doubles event with the victory of Ngoc Huyen and Nguyen Thi Yen against the Myanmar team.
Today, other representatives of Vietnamese Sepak Takraw continue to compete in the men's doubles (group stage). The opponents of Vietnamese athletes are Poland, Malaysia, Taiwan (China) and India.
