TPO - MU coach Erik ten Hag has criticized the tactics of England coach Gareth Southgate.
Ten Hag slams Southgate's vision |
Early this morning, England defeated Serbia 1-0 in their opening match at EURO 2024. In the 13th minute, the Three Lions took the lead thanks to a goal from Jude Bellingham. However, they played stalemate and could not score any more goals in the rest of the match. Coach Gareth Southgate even asked his players to retreat to defense in the second half even though they were completely capable of overwhelming their opponents.
Gareth Southgate’s pragmatic tactics and lackluster performances on the pitch have seen England come under fire. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has even publicly criticised Southgate’s “vision”.
Commenting on Dutch TV station NOS, coach Ten Hag commented: “In the first half, I really enjoyed Bellingham. He brought England to a higher level. However, England played very passively. I saw them sitting back, allowing the Serbian players to attack.”
“That was Southgate’s vision. England took an early 1-0 lead, but then Southgate decided to gamble by asking his players to close down and play defensively.”
Ten Hag's comments were quickly echoed by England fans. Despite possessing a stellar attacking lineup, Southgate's Three Lions were stuttering against Serbia, with the likes of Phil Foden, Saka and Harry Kane all having forgettable performances in Gelsenkirchen.
