A rough start for Vietnamese football, results beyond expectations

Recalling his early days leading the Vietnamese team, coach Kim Sang-sik admitted that he encountered many difficulties. The unsuccessful friendly matches made him receive a lot of doubt. However, with perseverance and bold changes in tactics, he and his students created a memorable AFF Cup.

This year, coach Kim Sang-sik will celebrate Lunar New Year in Vietnam.

“The most unforgettable match was probably the friendly match against India. In that match, the team had many opportunities but could not win, I really regret it. The most memorable match was the second leg against Thailand in the AFF Cup 2024 final, the match was like a movie, I was very happy that we won. That match was a miracle, it was a match that both I and Vietnamese fans certainly recognized that it would be a long time before there was such an attractive and dramatic confrontation," said Mr. Kim.

Commenting on the individuals who have made the most dramatic changes in the national team, Mr. Kim mentioned some silent heroes.

One of the most interesting discoveries of coach Kim Sang-sik at the recent AFF Cup was goalkeeper Dinh Trieu.

"First is the goalkeeper position when I used Dinh Trieu, before that, Van Lam and Nguyen Filip both played well. But this tournament, I bravely used Dinh Trieu and was successful. Besides that, Xuan Manh changed from defender to center back, he has developed and made a big step forward in his career. There is also Hoang Duc, I know he can play better but he is a bit gentle, I always push Hoang Duc to continue to develop. Or Quang Hai, he was adjusted to a better position to coordinate the ball," he said.

The first change comes from coach Kim Sang-sik himself.

When asked about the tactical adjustments to create such changes and transformations for the Vietnamese team, coach Kim said that the main factor is psychological tactics.

“The first change was me, it was about tactics and physical training with many positive changes. In the first friendly matches, the team did not achieve good results, the players lost confidence during training, preparing for the recent AFF Cup, I also had to find a way to encourage the players to regain their confidence, especially in the two finals, first leg and second leg against Thailand. Before, I also knew that Vietnam had lost many times to opponents, I always emphasized and reminded the experts that no matter who the opponent was, they had to win, first is to win, second is to win and third is to win, thanks to that, the players trusted me and the coaching staff to create today's success", Mr. Kim said.

The house Mr. Kim is living in is right next to My Dinh stadium.

The Korean strategist also once again mentioned Xuan Son, Tan Tai, Van Toan or Dinh Trieu,... players who were injured in the recent AFF Cup. According to him, the glory of the team had a few low notes when some players suffered quite serious injuries and that was the most regrettable thing: "I want to tell the players that I am always here waiting for you. You guys try to return to the team soon, let's try to achieve higher goals together".

First time sending love to family

Talking about his family and strong support, which he rarely mentions in interviews, Mr. Kim confided for the first time: “My beloved wife, my beloved children, I miss and love everyone very much. I am very grateful to everyone for their support. I hope we can meet soon in Vietnam, travel to Nha Trang together, spend time together and eat lots of delicious food,” Coach Kim Sang-sik concluded the interview.
