On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Ham Rong victory (April 3 and 4, 1965 - April 3 and 4, 2025), on the evening of March 29, at the Memorial Park for teachers and students who sacrificed their lives on the Ma River dike construction site in Nam Ngan Ward (Thanh Hoa City), Thanh Hoa City People's Committee held a memorial service to pay tribute to the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives on the Ham Rong front and the teachers and students of the Medical School and the Thanh Hoa 7+3 Pedagogical School who heroically sacrificed their lives on the Ma River dike construction site.

During the resistance war against the US to save the country, Ham Rong - Ma River Bridge had an extremely important strategic position, considered the "throat" of traffic and became the target of attack by the US Air Force to prevent support from the Northern rear to the Southern front.

Since early 1972, in order to save the complete bankruptcy of the "Vietnamization of the war" strategy, the US imperialists have frantically escalated their attacks on the North. They have mobilized a large air force and navy to fiercely attack the densely populated areas of Thanh Hoa province, especially the Ham Rong - Song Ma bridge area.

In the rainy season of 1972, the Ma River water level rose, while a few months earlier, the US had bombarded Ham Rong Bridge, severely damaging the Ma River dike, and the risk of dike failure and flooding was very high. To ensure the vital traffic route serving the southern battlefield and to prevent and combat floods, right at the time when US aircraft were heavily bombing, Thanh Hoa province mobilized emergency forces to build up the critical Ma River dike section from Nam Ngan to Ham Rong.

At the fateful moment, at 8:00 a.m. on June 14, 1972 (ie May 4, Nham Ty year), at the Ma River dike construction site about 1km from Ham Rong bridge, the force present at the construction site was more than 2,000 workers (including teachers and students of the Medical School, Thanh Hoa 7+3 Pedagogical School), when American planes suddenly appeared and dropped bombs, turning the construction site into a battlefield.

Nearly an hour after the sound of bombs and bullets stopped, the sky was filled with nothing but black smoke and a burning smell. After 24 series of bombs that stretched for kilometers like a hurricane, many people died on the spot. Many people who managed to get into the shelter also died because the bombs fell on the shelter or were injured by the pressure of the bombs and bullets...

Prayer ceremony.

In the smoke, dust and devastation of bombs, 64 teachers and students of the Medical School and the 7+3 Pedagogical School of Thanh Hoa sacrificed their lives. They were young men and women who fell, most of them in their twenties, carrying within them the passion, ambition, dreams and noble ideals of dedicating themselves to the cause of saving people and educating people as they wished...

The teachers and students who fell are like an immortal song, forever young, together with the blood and bones of countless martyrs, wounded and sick soldiers, they wrote the heroic epic "Ham Rong Victory" - the pride of the army and people of Thanh Hoa and the army and people of the whole country in the cause of national liberation and reunification.
