Earth Hour is an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), launched in 2007, calling on the community to turn off the lights for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March every year.

Since late afternoon on March 23, young people have filled the seats at the stage of the Youth Cultural House (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) to wait to watch the program. Nhu Y (student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) went with her close friend from high school, Bao Tran (student of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) and were present since early afternoon.
"We visited the Youth Festival, went shopping and prepared to watch Earth Hour. I knew about this event since 2020 and also turned off the lights to respond," Nhu Y shared.
Meanwhile, Bao Tran said that the first year she turned off the lights, her family did not agree because they did not understand the meaning of this action and did not know much about Earth Hour. After that, Tran found information to send to her parents and skillfully persuaded them.
"My mother used to find it inconvenient to turn off the lights and said that there was no power outage around, so why do we have to do that? I explained to her about the impact of turning off the lights for an hour and then she gradually 'went along' with me. Now she is the one who asked me about this year's Earth Hour event," Tran laughed.
Earth Hour aims to raise public awareness about climate change and energy saving around the world. In Vietnam, the lights-off program in response to this year's Earth Hour campaign carries the message "Saving electricity - Make it a habit", within the framework of the Youth Festival in 2024.

Over time, the purpose of the Earth Hour campaign has expanded to encourage the community to change their living habits, bring benefits to the environment, and use energy more economically and efficiently. In addition to tonight's program, the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union also organizes activities in response to the campaign such as the Green Steps Run.
This year's lights-out event featured the participation of Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 H'Hen Nie and nearly 50 young artists, music and dance groups. The young people conveyed the message of the Earth Hour campaign and responded to the lights-out event worldwide.

Earth Hour in Hanoi: Turn off the lights and enjoy the night of youth
On the evening of March 23, thousands of young people in Hanoi gathered at the Turn Off the Lights and Turn On Ideas 2024 festival to respond to Earth Hour.
This year's festival is a series of activities that lasts all day on March 23 at The Loop shopping center (Cau Giay district, Hanoi). With the message "reduce waste for cleanliness, recycle for green", the festival brings activities to help the community raise awareness about waste classification and environmental protection.
Accompanying the festival for the past 5 years, Meo Tom handmade brings young people a positive view of recycling and reusing fashion products.
Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online , Ms. Nguyen Ha - co-founder of the brand Meo Tom Handmade - said that in recent years, people's awareness of recycling and waste classification has changed a lot.
"In the past, some people wondered why recycled bags used new buttons, new locks... Many people thought that recycling meant using only old materials. But now people have a more correct view of recycling and reuse.
In particular, those who came to the festival this year have become more aware of collecting and classifying waste at the source and appreciate green products more," Ms. Ha confided.

"Every time I come to the festival, My Linh feels so much energy, because there are only young people here. The energy belongs to you, and the future also belongs to you. So My Linh hopes that your actions will contribute to changing the community's awareness of environmental protection," My Linh said.
