END OF MONTH PRINT NEWSPAPER - Journey of love along the Se Pon River

Cross the river to pick up the child

The story of nearly 40 years ago still sounds like yesterday. The Sepon River, which divides the border between Vietnam and Laos, still flows peacefully, but of the three children that Mrs. Kan Ling adopted on a late winter afternoon in 1986, only one remains.

“My heart feels like it’s being torn to pieces. Of the three children back then, only Pung remains. Pung’s two older brothers died when they were young due to illness,” Ms. Kan Ling said sadly.

I still remember, on a late winter afternoon in 1986, Mrs. Kan Ling and her husband, Mr. Ho Van Tang, crossed the Sepon River to Laos to adopt three orphans. It was pouring rain and freezing cold, but human love was the only thing that won, warming the fatherless and motherless children. Then, Mrs. Kan Ling carried the newborn baby, wrapped in a thin blanket; while Mr. Tang carried the two older children back to Vietnam, filled with joy and worry because he did not know how to feed the children.

In a land where most people are still living in poverty, adopting more children is unthinkable. But Kan Ling did not think much, “Let’s just adopt and then think about everything else later.” Then, Kan Ling and her husband brought one child after another to adopt.

In addition to her four biological children, along with three adopted children since the end of 1986; in 1989, three more orphans from the same village came to live with Kan Ling: Ho Van Thiet, Ho Thi Tha, and Ho Thi Thiep. In 2005, during a business trip to Ba Tang commune, more than 10 kilometers from home, Kan Ling welcomed three more orphaned sisters: Ho Thi Ha, Ho Thi Hinh, and Ho Thi Hoi. And in 2014, Kan Ling's family welcomed two more orphans: Ho Thi Miec and Ho Thi Muoi.

More people, more mouths to feed, more clothes to wear and many other needs of life. But Mrs. Kan Ling just smiled, a very gentle smile: I am poor but still have a house, a family, a husband and children... as for the children, they have no relatives. Therefore, the couple encouraged each other to work hard so that the children can have a life, have food, clothes and be able to study like other children.

The happiness of Pa Ko's mother

In the boundless love of their mother Pa Ko, the less fortunate children grew up year by year. In addition to going to school, these children also worked in the fields with their parents, looked after their younger siblings, and helped with housework.

Meals were mixed with cassava, but the nearly 20 people in Kan Ling's house were very happy and warm. Although life was difficult, Kan Ling taught and guided all 11 adopted children and 4 biological children, especially in learning and practicing their trade.

Ms. Ho Thi Lip - the eldest daughter of Mrs. Kan Ling, now a teacher at Ba Tang Primary and Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, Huong Hoa district confided: When we were young and when we were adults, Mother Ling always told us four sisters (Kan Ling's biological children) not to be jealous, because adopted children or biological children are all children of their parents. Mother told us, but often gave priority to adopted siblings in terms of clothes and books at the beginning of each school year, because the older siblings were too disadvantaged.

One of the three lucky children at the end of 1986, is now teacher Ho Thi Pung at the Xy Commune Kindergarten, Huong Hoa District. Recalling the past, Pung was moved to tears: If it weren't for mother Kan Ling, I would have been buried with my biological mother, and I wouldn't be where I am today. Without mother Kan Ling, Pung wouldn't have been able to continue living, let alone become a teacher.

Sitting here typing these words, we still can’t help but be moved. The lesson of humanity and love that mother Pa Ko overcame countless difficulties to raise her children to become good people is a journey that touches the heart.

To teach her children to strive in life, Ms. Kan Ling used her own efforts as an example. Growing up in a remote village in Huong Hoa district, her youthful enthusiasm in union activities was an important stepping stone for the young Pa Ko Kan Ling to be elected Vice President of the Women's Union, and then trusted to be elected Vice President of the Commune People's Committee. Before retiring, Ms. Kan Ling was the President of the People's Council of the former A Tuc commune, now renamed Lia commune, Huong Hoa district.

The most honorable thing for her is the Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister and the Minister, Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minorities for her outstanding achievements in "Studying and following the moral example and style of Ho Chi Minh" and "Implementing ethnic work and ethnic policies of the Party and State on the occasion of the 3rd Congress of Ethnic Minorities of Quang Tri province, 2019".

Sitting here typing these words, we still can’t help but be moved. The lesson of humanity and love that mother Pa Ko overcame countless difficulties to raise her children to become good people is a journey that touches the heart.
