South Korean officials today, March 9, revealed a new plan to mobilize police on the day the Constitutional Court issues its ruling in the impeachment case of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Yonhap quoted South Korean officials as saying that the country will mobilize about 14,000 police officers to carry out duties across the capital Seoul on the day the Constitutional Court issues a ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.
Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol after being released from detention in Seoul on March 8.
Police initially planned to deploy about 12,000 riot police from 192 units in downtown Seoul, but they are considering increasing the number after Mr. Yoon was released from prison on March 8. South Korea currently has about 130,000 police officers.
Mr. Yoon's release came a day after the court determined that his January 26 indictment on sedition charges had been issued after his initial detention period had expired.
Under the new plan, about 5,000 police officers will be deployed at the Constitutional Court and around Gwanghwamun Square the day before the court delivers its verdict, and about 9,000 more on the day of the verdict to prevent protesters from approaching.
The mobilization of such a large number of police officers is an unprecedented move, due to concerns after angry protesters recently stormed the Seoul District Court, according to Yonhap.
South Korean police also plan to deploy about 40 separate units to guard locations at risk of being attacked by protesters, including the embassies of the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Britain and Canada, as well as the residences of Constitutional Court judges and the headquarters of major political parties.
"We cannot be sure how the protests by both sides for and against the impeachment will unfold," a police official said, adding that plans for enhanced security were still being reviewed, according to Yonhap.
A date for the verdict has not yet been set. Earlier, Mr. Yoon attended his final impeachment hearing on February 25 to determine his responsibility for declaring martial law.
Mr. Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly on February 14, 2024, and if the Constitutional Court finds him guilty, he will be removed from office. If not, he will be reinstated.
