“Rusty” and “rusty”

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - In a Vietnamese language learning game show on television, the judges asked to determine which of the two words “han rust” and “han rust” was spelled correctly. The player gave the answer “han rust”, but the show did not accept it. Thus, according to the judges, the correct spelling should be “han rust”.

“Rusty” and “rusty”

However, this is a wrong question, because writing "rusty" or "rusty" is correct.

Rust is a compound word, in which rust means the state of being rusted; and rust also means the rusty substance formed by metal reacting with moist air (noun), or the process of becoming rusty (verb). Rust refers to something in a rusty state (generally speaking).

The two spellings rust and rust are recorded in dozens of dictionaries we have in hand. For example:

- Vietnamese Encyclopedia (National Council for the Compilation of Vietnamese Encyclopedia - Encyclopedia Publishing House - 2005), entry "rust" explains: "rust • [chemistry] (usually written: rust) x. Rust"; entry "rust" explains: "rust • [chemistry] (also written: rust), a product of oxidation that forms a film or layer on the surface of a metal or alloy preparation under the influence of the atmosphere or an environment containing oxygen or when heated in air. G is a metal oxide. G reduces the surface quality and corrodes the metal. G can be cleaned by mechanical and chemical methods".

- Vietnamese spelling dictionary (Hoang Phe editor) in the "ri" section notes that "gi" is often written (original text "thv. rust: copper rust, iron rust,...").

- The Great Vietnamese Dictionary (edited by Nguyen Nhu Y), the entry for "rust" explains: "n. Rust: iron rust".

- Vietnamese dictionary (Association for the Advancement of Wisdom): “rust • Refers to iron that gets wet and becomes rotten <>Rusty iron”.

- Vietnamese dictionary (Le Van Duc: “rust • bt. Rust, wet, oxidized iron: Rust, rusty iron”.

When observing rusty metal, we see that the reddish-brown or yellowish dirt often oozes out, oozes out from the inside and collects oxidized iron filings, sometimes spreading into clumps, or oozing into streams and drying. Therefore, writing rust (in nose ooze, eye ooze), or rust (in water ooze, blood ooze) both have their own reasons.

The pronunciation of the Northern dialect does not distinguish between rust or rust; while most people from Thanh Hoa or the Central region pronounce it as rust. Therefore, in reality, in addition to rust/rust, there is also rust/rust (rust here means wetness, dirt spreading, like rust; tears staining eyelashes,...).

When “rì” is accepted by both the community and the dictionary as another spelling of “gì”, then “han rust” or “han rust”, “gìch làm” or “rìch làm”, “hoen rust” or “hoen rust”, are all accepted.

Thus, rust and rusty are considered to be one of the "ambiguous" cases in spelling.
