On the morning of August 15, Mr. Nguyen Phi Quynh, Head of the Hong Linh Protective Forest Management Board (under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ha Tinh province) said that recently, the situation of caterpillars damaging pine forests in the area under the management unit has been very complicated, with an area infected with caterpillars of about 2,000 hectares.
According to statistics from the Hong Linh Protective Forest Management Board, the general density in the whole area is from 10-50 individuals/tree, locally there are places with a density of 300-400 individuals/tree.

The caterpillars destroy the leaves and can cause pine trees to dry out and die. Many pine forests are being exploited for resin.
According to the Hong Linh Protective Forest Management Board, caterpillars are always present in pine forests, usually occurring every 3-5 years. This caterpillar epidemic is due to high humidity, combined with erratic rain and sunshine, which is favorable for the caterpillars to thrive.

Currently, the Hong Linh Protective Forest Management Board is coordinating with the authorities to spray pesticides to prevent caterpillars. Accordingly, the entire area damaged by caterpillars has been sprayed 1 to 2 times; areas with a density of 300-400 caterpillars/tree must be sprayed 4-5 times.
