At the opening ceremony of the new school year this morning (October 7), Professor Bangsberg revealed for the first time the reason for giving up many prestigious positions at top universities in the world to join VinUni University.
He said he met an extremely talented, enthusiastic and highly collaborative team to create this breakthrough development.
He is impressed by the students who are intelligent and ambitious, humble and always learning. He wants to bring Vietnamese students a global perspective, helping them face international challenges. It is the students here who inspire him every day.
Professor, Doctor David Bangsberg, President of VinUni University, spoke on the morning of October 7.
Since accepting the position of President of VinUni University, Professor David Bangsberg has maintained the habit of starting each day at school by drinking coffee with students. He enjoys this activity, which helps him gain more energy from listening to students' aspirations, nurturing those aspirations a little bit more, and creating strategies to help them realize their aspirations.
"Students, please do not hesitate to schedule a coffee date with me via email. You can have tea or even a smoothie. My treat! If you allow me, I will post a photo of our meeting on social media, so your parents can follow along too," Professor David Bangsberg sent to VinUni students.
Before becoming the President of VinUni, Professor Bangsberg taught and researched at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and the University of California, San Francisco.
He also served as founding dean of the School of Public Health (Oregon Health Sciences University) and the University of Portland, USA.

Professor Bangsberg also spearheaded the creation of the Dean’s Scholarship Fund at the School of Public Health to support tuition for talented students. As of 2022, he has led efforts to raise more than $26 million in funding for research related to health care, health reform, and social change.
He is one of the world's leading scientists in the medical field. During his career, he has published 498 research papers, which have been cited 54,000 times and have an h-index of 116. Thanks to that, on October 6, the professor was named in the list of the world's most influential scientists in 2023.
The ranking was published by Elsevier Publishing House, selecting a group of scientists in the top 100,000 most influential scientists in the world based on the most cited scientific articles out of a total of nearly 210,000 ranked scientists.
Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairwoman of VinUni University Council, shared her joy that Professor Bangsberg will take on the position of President. "The professor possesses the dedication and empathy of a physician; as well as the networking ability of a great leader and the precision and intelligence of an excellent scientist," said Ms. Lan.
She believes that Professor Bangsberg will make a new mark, promoting the development of VinUni on the path to becoming an excellent young university, aiming for world-class status.
