(Dan Tri) - VinUni's resident physician class has graduated and is ready to contribute to the country's medical field.

International standard residency training program

Returning to Hanoi after 6 years, Prof. Dr. Lisa Bellini, Executive Vice President, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania (Upstate, USA) was moved to witness the maturity of the first resident physicians (2020 - 2024) of VinUni University at the graduation ceremony. After a 4-year journey of hard work, these talented young doctors are now ready to work in hospitals.

As the head of the entire postgraduate medical training system at UPenn - a strategic partner of VinUni, and the chief advisor for residency training at the Vingroup - Penn Alliance, Prof. Lisa Bellini said that the training quality of VinUni's residency program complies with the same strict requirements as UPenn's program.

"We had meetings with the team of doctors and clinical lecturers at 3 practice hospitals (including the National Children's Hospital, 108 Military Central Hospital, Vinmec Times City International General Hospital) to discuss and exchange to improve the quality of the VinUni residency program.

UPenn senior experts also organized a training session on clinical teaching for faculty of VinUni Health Sciences Institute, including part-time and guest lecturers from practicing hospitals," shared Professor Lisa Bellini.

In addition, UPenn regularly supports VinUni Health Sciences Institute in the assessment process, from entrance exams to periodic assessments and graduation exams. Thanks to that, VinUni's three residency programs including internal medicine, pediatrics and surgery have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME-I). This event has made VinUni the first university in Vietnam, and the second university in Southeast Asia, to achieve ACGME-I accreditation.

"I believe that with the excellent quality of the training program, VinUni will soon develop a generation of medical leaders not only in Vietnam but also in the world. I feel fortunate to be a member of the Vingroup-Penn strategic alliance, contributing to the strong transformation of medical education in Vietnam," affirmed Professor Bellini.

Creating a solid foundation for the next generation

Accompanying the Institute of Health Sciences since the first days of laying the first bricks, leading professors and experts have made many contributions to VinUni's new and innovative residency training program. The training program has a minimum duration of 4 years, with the surgical specialty being 6 years.

Prof. Dr. Le Van Phuoc - Deputy Director of VinUni Medical Education at the graduation ceremony of the first residency course.

Prof. Dr. Le Van Phuoc, Deputy Director of VinUni Institute of Health Sciences, said that when designing the program, VinUni aimed for international quality standards, based on ACGME-I accreditation. "This is a prestigious accreditation organization for residency programs not only in the US but also around the world. Committing to the minimum study time required by the ACGME-I accreditation organization is important," said Prof. Dr. Le Van Phuoc.

Prof. Dr. Le Van Phuoc added that VinUni's residency recruitment process includes 3 rounds, of which round 2 uses the IFOM CSE standard exam set - compiled and authenticated by the National Bureau of Medical Examinations (NBME) - which is also the agency that compiles the USMLE exam (the national exam for US medical licensing).

Thanks to that, VinUni can ensure the quality of the candidates' input. At the same time, the training period is long enough for VinUni to help medical residents practice basic skills, ready for advanced clinical practice.

According to Professor David Bangsberg, President of VinUni University and Director of the Institute of Health Sciences, after graduation, VinUni resident physicians are not only welcomed into the Vinmec healthcare system with attractive salaries, but also have a bright future in their professional fields, easily accepted to study advanced specialized programs at prestigious schools and practice facilities around the world.

"What we are proud of about VinUni's residents is that they can bring the best quality of healthcare to patients in Vietnam. They are our next generation, with the potential to become Vietnam's future clinical leaders," said Prof. Bangsberg.

Cooperating with Vinmec in training resident physicians also helps VinUni build a closed training cycle, creating confidence for students about solid job opportunities after graduation and opening up opportunities to develop postgraduate training programs in the future. This also affirms Vinmec's position as a comprehensive academic healthcare system with a combination of medical examination and treatment, teaching and research.

"Residents graduating from VinUni have solid professional skills and knowledge updated according to world standards. Vinmec aims to develop an academic medical system, so it has and will continue to need high-quality human resources. We also hope that VinUni will not stop at residency training, but continue to work with Vinmec to open specialized and postgraduate programs to continue developing human resources," said Prof. Dr. Doan Quoc Hung, Director of Training at Vinmec Healthcare System.
