The durian market in the Mekong Delta, Southeast and Central Highlands regions is clearly differentiated in terms of price and type of durian. While the Mekong Delta is diversified with many types of durian and prices fluctuate strongly, the Southeast and Central Highlands focus on popular types with stable prices. The emergence of premium types shows the potential for the development of the high-quality durian market, especially when consumer demand is increasing.

Thailand is rolling out an ambitious strategy to effectively manage its fruit supply, with a target of reaching a total output of 950,000 tonnes by 2025. According to Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, the measures are not only aimed at addressing overproduction but also at boosting domestic consumption and expanding export opportunities. This year, fruit supply is expected to increase by 15% compared to last year, especially for staple fruits such as durian, longan and mango.
One of the main focuses of this strategy is to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce. To achieve this, the Ministry of Commerce has proposed seven key measures and 25 action plans, covering the entire supply chain from production, domestic marketing to exports and trade facilitation. The ultimate goal is to achieve price stability through the efficient distribution of 950,000 tonnes of fruit.
At the production level, Thailand focuses on building trust by promoting GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification and establishing “Set Zero” centers to maintain fruit quality. At the same time, the strategy also emphasizes encouraging domestic consumption by integrating markets, distributing products beyond production areas, and supporting the promotion of geographical indications. Initiatives such as free fruit delivery and organizing “Durian Buffets” to attract tourists are also being implemented.
Internationally, Thailand has stepped up market promotion through holding border trade fairs, facilitating business matching, and participating in major trade exhibitions. In addition, taking advantage of free trade agreements and negotiating trade facilitation measures with partner countries is also an important part of the strategy.
To diversify its revenue sources, Thailand has encouraged fruit processing and promoted the cultivation of ornamental plants to replace annual crops. At the same time, trade barriers have been addressed by facilitating labor mobility, establishing provincial sales teams, and setting up task forces to negotiate with China.
Finally, legal measures will be taken to ensure price transparency, including mandatory display of purchase prices at collection points every day at 8am. Stricter measures will also be taken to prevent commercial exploitation, according to the Bangkok Post.
With these efforts, Thailand not only aims to stabilize the domestic fruit market but also consolidate its position as one of the world's leading fruit exporting countries.
