Pig price today in the South. (Synthesis: Du Y)
In general, the live hog market on March 31 showed a picture of slight and local fluctuations across the country. While the North and Central regions recorded a downward trend in prices in some provinces, the South maintained relative stability.
African swine fever vaccination rate is low, why?
African swine fever is still complicated. One of the important solutions to prevent and control this disease is vaccination. However, due to many reasons, most livestock farms in Bac Giang province are still indifferent and have not paid attention to vaccinating their pigs, according to Bac Giang newspaper.
African swine fever not only causes heavy economic losses but also costs a lot of money and effort to destroy dead pigs. However, the vaccination rate for pigs in the province is very low. Since the beginning of the year, the whole province has only vaccinated 52 thousand doses of vaccine. The amount of vaccine is mainly purchased by livestock facilities. This result is too modest compared to the total pig herd in the province of more than 786 thousand (the vaccination rate is only 6.6%).
According to Mr. Hoang Van Du, Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, African swine fever is a dangerous infectious disease that spreads quickly and occurs in all pig species, causing serious damage with a mortality rate of up to 100%. The reason for the low vaccination rate against African swine fever is that this is a new vaccine with a high selling price (average 60,000 VND/dose). Meanwhile, the cost of raising pigs has increased recently, many farmers have suffered losses, the epidemic situation is not stable, so many people do not want to invest. In addition, many farm owners are skeptical about the effectiveness, protection and immunity of the vaccine.
In addition, local authorities do not have a support mechanism for farmers to get vaccinated; the policy on supporting post-vaccination risks is unclear. In particular, the authorities have not yet included African swine fever vaccines in the mandatory vaccination program and plan like vaccines for classical swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, etc.
It is estimated that in the coming time, the risk of disease recurrence and widespread spread is still high, especially in small-scale livestock farms or those that have been previously affected by the disease. Authorities recommend that vaccination is a very important measure but must be used according to the manufacturer's instructions. At the same time, it must be combined with other measures such as: Ensuring biosafety in livestock farming, supplementing antibodies, enhancing immunity in disease prevention and control...
