In March 2024, a majority of European Union (EU) member states proposed to ease or suspend the EUDR, citing concerns that the law could hurt EU farmers by preventing them from exporting produce from deforested land. This year, the EU rolled back some environmental protections to ease farmer protests over environmental policies and cheap imports, which have drawn criticism from environmental activists.
The EUDR requires companies importing certain products such as soy, beef, and coffee to prove that their supply chains are not contributing to deforestation, or face hefty fines. Companies are required to create digital maps of their supply chains, including identifying the origins of ingredients from small, remote farms. Some argue that this is too complicated, given that global supply chains involve millions of farms and many intermediaries whose data is difficult to verify.
Eurocommerce, which represents the European retail industry, has thanked the EC for listening to its concerns about compliance and the risk of disruption to supply chains. Brussels believes the EUDR is necessary to stop deforestation, which is one of the main causes of climate change, second only to the burning of fossil fuels.
World coffee prices today
At the end of the most recent trading session, the price of Robusta coffee in London for November 2024 delivery increased by 33 USD/ton, at 4,954 USD/ton, and for January 2025 delivery increased by 38 USD/ton, at 4,758 USD/ton.
Arabica coffee prices for December 2024 delivery increased by 0.20 cent/lb to 252.25 cents/lb, and for March 2025 delivery increased by 0.35 cent/lb to 250.85 cents/lb.
Despite the recent decline in coffee prices in the last two sessions, coffee prices in London are still higher than at the beginning of the year and in previous years. Strikes by workers at US East Coast ports have disrupted the unloading of imported coffee, causing a shortage in the US, the world's top coffee consumer.
