On March 17, Tuoi Tre Online reporters visited the home of Ms. Dinh Hai Nam, 42 years old, in Cho town, Yen Phong district, Bac Ninh, to listen to her share the story of finding the benefactor who lent her 8 taels of gold more than 20 years ago.

"If I owe you something, I have to pay it back. I don't know how to repay the favor. The old feelings, after so many years of not seeing each other. When I called you yesterday (March 16), I felt like the first day I met you. My respect for you is the same as the first day," said Ms. Nam.

Ms. Hai Nam found a benefactor who lent her 8 taels of gold to treat her son's hemangioma 20 years ago.

"I don't fish for views or likes"

According to Ms. Nam, when posting this story online, her wish was to find someone who helped her when she was in her most difficult time, not to attract views or likes.

Born and raised in Hoa Tien commune, Yen Phong district, Bac Ninh, her life was difficult and arduous. Poverty followed her until she got married and started a family.

After giving birth 5-6 months, this woman discovered that her daughter had a tumor on her shoulder. After being examined by a doctor, she learned that she had a hemangioma.

The poor family did not have enough money to treat her child, so she had to bring her child home and do all kinds of jobs, from selling cabbage in the morning to sanding for hire, doing whatever she was told.

When she had saved some money, Ms. Nam took her child to the Children's Hospital in Hanoi for treatment. There, she met Ms. Nga, who was also being treated for a uterine tumor. The two women, strangers, sympathized and shared each other's situation.

"Ms. Nga is the one who has more money. Sometimes she takes me out to eat vermicelli with tofu, sometimes she shares new clothes, sometimes she even gives me an extra ten or twenty thousand.

That is why I value her priceless affection. Actually, I did not ask Ms. Nga to borrow money, but my child was in the hospital for too long, the nurse asked the family if they wanted to do the surgery. At that time, I did not have enough money but was still determined to do the surgery for my child.

Ms. Nga knew about the matter and asked if I borrowed money. I asked her if she wasn't afraid that I wouldn't pay it back. She just said "never mind". You're so stupid, I'm the only one who helps you because you're a good person," Ms. Nam said.

After that, Ms. Nam and Ms. Nga took the train to Ms. Nga's house in Phu Tho. In the subconscious of this 42-year-old woman, she vaguely remembered going with her benefactor to Phu Tho to get gold.

"Ms. Nga took 8 taels of gold from a toad-shaped wooden box and gave it to me. At that time, I didn't dare take it home because I was afraid of dropping it on the way. I told Ms. Nga to hold it for me, and I wouldn't dare take it until we got back to Hanoi," Ms. Nam said, crying.

After borrowing 8 taels of gold (the selling price at that time was about 620,000 VND/tael), plus money borrowed from acquaintances and friends, Ms. Nam treated her daughter's illness. Gradually, her daughter's illness improved and she no longer had to be hospitalized regularly.

By 2005, during her visits to the doctor, Ms. Nam brought rice and gifts from her hometown to Ms. Nga and gradually paid back 5 taels of gold (3 taels of gold were owed). Every time the mother and son returned, Ms. Nga also gave them extra money for the trip.

Many times looking for benefactor

According to Ms. Hai Nam, in 2010 she gave birth to her second child. Due to financial difficulties, her husband was not at home, and she had to take care of the child while working, she temporarily put aside the idea of finding Ms. Nga. In 2014, when conditions were better, she started volunteering, hoping to find her old benefactor.

"But in 2018, my house burned down. Since then, I lost contact and had no more information related to Ms. Nga. Except for the subconscious memory of her house, I had no other information, so the search became hopeless," she said.

Ms. Nam added that thanks to the support of everyone, the online community and searching the photo archive on Zalo, she found more photos and information of Ms. Nga.

"Many uncles, aunts, friends called to say that they don't believe in people's hearts now, but I want to share so that everyone knows that in the midst of this difficult life, there are still real people and stories. I hope everyone doesn't distort or look at life negatively. That's why I shared the livestream without Ms. Nga," said Ms. Hai Nam.

Up to now, Ms. Dinh Hai Nam's first daughter has gotten married and has two children. Remembering the past favor, the mother and daughter agreed to meet Ms. Nga again to repay the debt to the person who helped them in their difficult times.

During the livestream chat on the evening of March 16, Ms. Hai Nam wanted to meet her benefactor immediately, but because her daughter was in the hospital being treated for a fever and allergies, she had to postpone her plan. Besides, Ms. Nga is also a tactful and reserved person, not wanting to make the meeting public at this time.

"Besides the debt issue, I want to find you to see how you are living, if you are healthy, and if your life is better," Nam shared.

Ms. Nghiem Thi Mai - a close friend of Ms. Hai Nam - said that Ms. Hai Nam is a capable woman who works hard to earn money to raise her child to overcome a serious illness.

She observed that you are a kind-hearted, honest person, always wanting to repay those who have done you favors.

During all those years her husband was away from home, according to Ms. Mai, Ms. Nam never complained or told anyone, only encouraged herself to try her best to be both mother and father, raising her children.

Mr. Nghiem Van Ke - a construction contractor in the same commune as Ms. Nam - assessed her as a hard-working but determined woman who took care of almost all the family chores by herself.

As reported by Tuoi Tre Online , on March 13, Ms. Hai Nam posted on Facebook an article looking for Ms. Nga (born in 1980, from Phu Tho) - the person who more than 20 years ago lent 8 taels of gold to treat her daughter's hemangioma.

Then in 2008, Ms. Hai Nam lost contact with Ms. Nga. Since then, Ms. Hai Nam has tried to find her many times but to no avail.

When Ms. Hai Nam posted the article on Facebook, many people were interested and shared it with the hope that this woman would soon find her benefactor.

However, some people believe that this story is not true. Currently, Ms. Nam is the owner of a store near the center of Cho town, Yen Phong district, Bac Ninh.

The leader of the Cho town People's Committee said that after receiving information on social networks, the police and the residential group verified information related to the woman who was looking for a benefactor to lend her 8 taels of gold to treat her daughter's hemangioma more than 20 years ago.
