The final round of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia-Pacific opened on March 1 at the University of Engineering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The contest brought together 195 information technology students, from 65 teams from 40 of the most prestigious universities in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Among them, many of Asia's leading schools are the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kyoto University (Japan), Korea University, Seoul National University (Korea), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand). The competition in Vietnam is one of 8 regional ICPC competitions to select 16 teams to compete in the global final in Kazakhstan in September.
In the first time the Asia-Pacific regional finals were held in Vietnam, the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi carefully prepared facilities and technical equipment.
The exam is operated entirely on online systems according to international standards, the VNOJ online monitoring system is operated by the Vietnam Olympic Club, with Professor Rie Shigetomi Yamaguchi (Japan) as Technical Director.
The exam committee and the jury are made up of leading experts in the region. The chairman of the jury is Mr. Jonathan Irvin Gunawan (Indonesia). As a former contestant and leader of many Vietnamese teams to the global ICPC finals, Mr. Bui The Duy, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, assessed that the ICPC teams have very impressive capabilities.
In the competition, candidates need many different skills such as programming zero-error programs, testing, teamwork... Therefore, he believes that this competition is a good opportunity for students to develop themselves and for countries to choose talents for the development steps of the Information Technology industry.
In fact, many of the winners of the regional competition now work for multinational technology corporations such as Google or Huawei. Many have started successful businesses in Vietnam.
"We hope that the people sitting here today will be the leaders of successful technology companies in the future," said Mr. Duy.
Prof. Dr. Chu Duc Trinh, Rector of the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Head of the ICPC 2024 Organizing Committee, affirmed that this year's exam will be successfully organized, leaving the best impression on international friends.
Vietnam first participated in ICPC in 2005. Since then, Vietnamese teams have been consistently in the top 100-140 schools in the global ICPC finals. In 2002, the team from the University of Technology was the first Vietnamese representative to win a bronze medal, ranking 12th globally. This was also the first team from Southeast Asian countries to win a medal.
