The decision, which will give the African Union status equivalent to the European Union, instead of its current status as an invited international organization, is expected to be announced by G20 leaders at a summit in New Delhi, India, from September 9 to 10.
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a letter to the leaders of the G20 countries, proposing to grant full permanent membership to the African Union at the upcoming summit of the group. This proposal by Mr. N. Modi is said to be aimed at realizing India's previous commitment to increase Africa's presence and partnership in global issues.
