TPO - UEFA's change in regulations has caused EURO 2024 to witness something unprecedented in history: Up to 6 players will share the Golden Boot award (Top scorer of the tournament).
Olmo beams as he receives EURO 2024 top scorer award |
In the past, UEFA had clear rules to avoid having too many top scorers at EURO. In the event that two or more players scored the same number of goals, UEFA would consider the number of assists to award the Golden Boot.
A typical example is at EURO 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrik Schick both led the scoring list (5 goals), but the Portuguese striker won the Golden Boot award thanks to 1 assist while Patrik Schick did not.
However, UEFA has changed the rules for EURO 2024 and there are no “sub-indices” in the race for the Golden Boot. All are counted by goals. As a result, EURO 2024 witnessed an unprecedented event in history: 6 players from 6 different national teams shared the Golden Boot award. They are Dani Olmo (Spain), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Harry Kane (England), Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Georges Mikautadze (Georgia) and Ivan Schranz (Slovakia).
According to the old rules, Dani Olmo would be honored because he had 2 assists, more than the other 5 names. Notably, Dani Olmo was the only one to receive the award and take a photo with the EURO 2024 Golden Boot after the final match this morning.
Harry Kane refused to accept the award with Olmo. This was understandable when England once again lost the final and missed out on their first ever EURO title. Harry Kane himself had a forgettable final round. Despite scoring 3 goals, the striker's performance was widely criticized, especially when he failed to score in the last 3 matches against Switzerland, the Netherlands and Spain.
