Panoramic view of Lieu Hanh Temple on Mother Goddess's death anniversary night
In the folk beliefs of the Vietnamese as well as some other ethnic groups, the worship of goddesses and Mother Goddesses is a fairly common phenomenon and has deep historical and social roots. Respecting women, respecting the role of mothers and wives in our country is a fine tradition and has a strong vitality of folk culture - it is the political and social foundation, the spiritual and mental foundation, which has formed and developed the worship of goddesses. The custom of worshiping mothers and mothers from the Van Lang - Au Lac period is still passed down to this day, which is the worship of Goddesses of the ancient Vietnamese people.
In 2000, Lieu Hanh Holy Mother Temple was ranked as a historical and cultural relic by the People's Committee of Quang Binh province. In 2024, the Mother's Death Anniversary Festival was renamed "Hoanh Son Holy Mother" Festival and upgraded to a district-level festival.
The belief in Mother Goddess worship has existed for a long time, deeply rooted in the people's consciousness, and has a strong vitality in folk culture. The custom of Mother Goddess worship exists in many places and is related to many types of beliefs about land, water, mountains and forests, rice plants, and society... Our people have generalized the diverse and rich beliefs of Mother Goddess worship in the direction of rising to a religion, thus forming the Tam Phu religion - worshiping three Mother Goddesses: in the sky there is Mother Goddess Thien Phu, in the mountains and forests there is Mother Goddess Nhac Phu with Mother Goddess Thuong Ngan, in the rivers and seas there is Mother Goddess Thuy Phu with Mother Thoai (Water).
Lieu Hanh Holy Mother Temple was built during the "Thien Hieu" period of the Later Le Dynasty (1557).
Mother Lieu Hanh, commonly known as Lady Lieu, is associated with the needs of all aspects of daily life and has therefore become closer and more familiar to the masses.
